The 50/50 [NR] roller coaster

The ratio of tips and rumors I received for a new DSLR vs. mirrorless camera announcement on August 24 is 50/50. The main difference is that I got some details on the mirrorless camera and nothing on the DSLR front. This is why I changed  my “prediction” from two DSLR bodies to a mirrorless only announcement next week.

I already see many readers are getting upset and all I want to ask you is to wait till next week. As the last announcement showed, I do not know everything and just because I do not have any detailed specs doesn’t necessary mean that my “prophecy” is correct.

Nikon’s mirrorless: not a “pro” camera but with few very innovative features

Nikon has mentioned on several occasions that they will surprise the market and will do things differently with their mirrorless camera. They also said that their mirrorless camera will not be targeted at professionals (although several websites reported the contrary) and will have enhanced video features.

The new Nikon mirrorless camera was described to me as “having more enthusiast than pro features” and “having few very innovative features”. Nikon is also working on a special flash unit for their mirrorless camera which will be probably announced in the future.

Nikon’s rugged Coolpix camera: the rebirth of the Nikonos?

In an old interview with Focus-Numerique, Mr. Tetsuro Goto (Director of Laboratory R&D at Nikon Japan) said:

“Personally I think the Nikonos reborn in the future”

The upcoming rugged Coolpix from Nikon may actually be the rebirth of the Nikonos line. The rumor is that the new camera will have a depth rating of 33 feet (10 meters), very good low light capabilities and may even resemble the design of the old Nikonos cameras. Another source told me that Nikon may be after the GoPro cameras and will release a whole line of accessories for attaching the camera to a helmet, bike, surf, etc. just like GoPro.
