Nikon press release: Joe McNally was using “the latest Nikon cameras” for his new exhibition

I mentioned last week about Joe McNally’s upcoming exhibition that will open on August 24th. Today Nikon issued a press release that contained the following paragraph:

Based on McNally’s renowned “Faces of Ground Zero, Portraits of the Heroes of September 11, 2001,” this updated special exhibition will feature original life-size portraits, along with new digital images and exclusive video interviews shot with the latest Nikon cameras…

Latest Nikon cameras that can shoot video? Was he using the Nikon D5100? Nikon D7000 is currently one year old. The Nikon D3s is the only full frame camera that can shoot video and was announced in October of 2009.

First mockups of Nikon’s mirrorless interchangeable lens camera

I do not have any real images of the upcoming  Nikon mirrorless interchangeable lens camera but I received two mockups that will give you a pretty good idea of the camera’s design:

Here are some details in addition to those I published earlier today:

  • Similar clean design like the Coolpix P300.
  • The camera will not have any dials on the top plate.
  • Speaker will be located on top plate.
  • There will be a pop-up flash and/or flash hot shoe for external flash.
  • The new mirrorless lenses may have electronic zoom buttons (see this patent).
  • There will be some functionality that will be introduced for the first time in a mirrorless camera.
  • The camera will probably be available in different colors.

Nikon’s mirrorless interchangeable lens camera will be announced on August 24th

The latest information indicates that Nikon will announce only their mirrorless camera on August 24th (in addition to the new Coolpix cameras). This makes sense since the mirrorless mount pictured above was the only real leak in the past few weeks. I don’t have the technical specs yet, but here are some more details on the upcoming interchangeable lens camera from Nikon:

  • There is a good chance that more than one version/model of the new mirrorless camera wil be announced at the same time
  • The camera body will be very small, very compact, with a clean industrial design
  • Built-in high resolution EVF
  • Many video features
  • Compatible with F-mount lenses
  • The sensor will be slightly smaller than Micro Four Thirds (probably 17mm in diameter, 2.6x crop factor)
  • Four lenses to be released, one of them will be a pancake, the second will be a super zoom
  • Phase and contrast-detect AF
  • Camera code/project name: X810
