Rumor: Nikon ordered 150,000 bags from Crumpler

The rumor is that Nikon recently ordered 150,000 (yes, one hundred and fifty thousand) small Crumpler bags. Nikon has previously used Crumpler bags for special promotions (like this Crumpler backpack created for Nikon’s 90th Anniversary):

What else is gone?

Let’s first start with the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM lens (Nikon mount) – discontinued:

I am not sure why, but Amazon Germany doesn’t sell the Nikon D3x any longer:

I got few reports that some smaller dealers in Europe have also removed the D3x from their catalogs. In the US, the D3x is in stock almost everywhere.

Yes, Nikon D5000 is now discontinued

A month ago I did mention that the Nikon D5000 will be discontinued and now B&H confirms it – both Nikon D5000 kit and body only are listed as discontinued on their website:

At that point I have not received any reliable information about a potential D5000 replacement (D5100 should basically be a D3100 with a swivel display).

Nikon cuts profit forecast because of a stronger yen

Today Nikon published their latest financial results. They cut the full year profit forecast from ¥52 to ¥48 billion because of a stronger yen.

Nikon Imaging is doing good – Executive Vice President Ichiro Terato said this referring to the camera division: “If it were not for the effect of exchange rates, we would have achieved a double-digit increase in sales and operating profit for the half year” (source).

Nikon is expecting to sell more photography products but have less operating income. Forecast for interchangeable lenses and compact cameras were revised upward, single-reflex cameras forecast remains the same (table represents estimation for the year ending March 31, 2011 for Nikon Imaging only):

It remains to be seen if the stronger yen will trigger Nikon to do another price increase, like they did few times in the past.

Nikon D7000 will be available in Europe on November 5th

According to Amazon UK (and many other stores in Europe) the Nikon D7000 body only will start shipping this Friday (November 5th).

The Nikon D7000 kit is listed to be available in stock on November 15th, but I believe many stores will get them on Friday as well.

3D digital photo frame Nikon NF-300i

Many readers are still emailing me about Nikon’s new NF-300i 3D photo frame. I guess my previous post was mainly targeted at the new Picturetown 3D service, even though the new 3D photo frame is part of this service and was mentioned in my post. Here are some more details on the Nikon NF-300i photo frame.

Nikon was able to achieve 3D images without the use of special glasses by arranging separate images for the left and right eyes. The actual implementation was done with the help of lenticular lenses (“designed so that when viewed from slightly different angles, different images are magnified”):

On the figure above, the right eye will see the blue portion of the image, while the left eye will see the red portion of the image. Because of the different angles the left and the right eyes view the separate images on the frame, the combined picture can be perceived as 3D.

Nikon’s Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera could be announced at CES 2011

The latest rumor is that Nikon’s Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera will be announced at CES 2011 (January 6-9, 2011). It is not typical for manufacturers to announce high end photography gear at CES (Consumer Electronics Show). If this rumor turns out to be true, expect the Nikon EVIL camera to be a consumer product (not really a surprise). I would rate this rumor at 40% probability, since it came from only one source.

Nikon had a giveaway at the PDN Photo Plus Expo and one of the questions on the survey was “Will you be considering the purchase of a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera within the next 18 months?”
