Birds in flight photography with the Nikon D800 and D600 cameras

Hi [NR], I am Jiayi Chong (Flickr). Outside of work, I do wildlife (mostly birds) photography as my weekend hobby/passion.

There has been much discussion about the new D600 and D800 cameras with regard to capturing birds in flight. Since I use both of these camera bodies regularly, I thought I could provide some useful insight into how these cameras perform when faced with unpredictable, moving subjects.

Nikon is still committed to their mirrorless and Coolpix cameras

In a recent interview with AP, Nikon ensured their commitment to the Nikon 1 mirrorless camera system:

Despite the challenging market, Nikon says it remains committed to the CSC format.

‘I think you can say from the launch of the AW version of the Nikon 1 that we are committed to investing in what could be seen as a niche market,’ continued Gilbert.

‘So, within the flexibility of the Nikon 1 platform we are able to produce products for [different] sectors.’

However, Tanaka would not be drawn on Nikon’s plans for CSC in 2014, only saying that the firm will continue to support this area.

In the latest press release for the production of 85 million Nikkor lenses, Nikon also mentioned their commitment to the Nikon 1 system:

Interesting: Lexar XQD memory cards listed as discontinued *UPDATED*

The 32GB and 64GB Lexar XDQ Pro 1100x memory cards are currently listed as discontinued at B&H. Lexar’s XQD cards were just one year old. During the 2014 CES the company did not introduce any new XQD models, but they announced the world’s fastest CFast 2.0 memory card that can reach read transfer speeds up to 500MB/s and capacities up to 256GB. Lexar XQD cards are still listed on their own website, Adorama and Amazon.
