Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G discontinued (part 2)

The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 light gray version is listed as discontinued on the Japanese site mapcamera.com with the word “生産終了” which means “end of production”:

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G discontinued?

nikon-70-200mm

From dpreview:

“My dealer says they cannot buy the 70-200mm 2.8 VR from Nikon anymore.”

The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G lens is probably the most speculated lens in the whole Nikon product line.

Can someone confirm this report?

Nikon related new/links

This week the Nikon links section will be published earlier. I will be on the road and will have limited Internet access in the next few days:

  • Nikon Solution Expo 2009 canceled.
  • Nikon and Fujitsu will establish a joint company named “Nikon Imaging Systems”. The company will be responsible for the firmware development in Nikon digital cameras (source).
  • Nikon launches D5000 cashback scheme in the UK.

Nikon D3000 picture

Lenstip.com got their hands on a Nikon D3000 picture:

nikon_d3000

Check their site for a detailed comaprisson with the D5000 and a D3000/D5000 overlay. It seems that the video-less version of the Nikon D5000 will be called D3000 and not D4000 as speculated earlier.

The D3000 will be the new entry level DLSR from Nikon.

“Reverie” – first feature film shot entirely on the Nikon D90

A feature film shot entirely on the Nikon D90 has been completed, and is in the process of being released (all this could be a prank, I don’t know at that point):

'Reverie' (83 Min.) Starring Zach Sanchez, 'World's Greatest Dad' (Robin Williams, Bobcat Goldthwait)

'Reverie' (83 Min.) starring Zach Sanchez (who played in 'World's Greatest Dad' with Robin Williams, written by Bobcat Goldthwait)

Reverie Teaser (First Feature Shot on the Nikon D90) from ‘Reverie’: The First D90 Feature on Vimeo.

From the email I received:

The filmmakers are currently in talks with Distributor Claudia Mammana (Platoon, Wharlock) for securing a proper distribution company for the film, through associates such as Arnold Kopelson (The Fugitive, Seven), and Antonio Llorens. As well, the producers are currently pursuing the endorsement of Nikon, and are in very early discussions with the company regarding future marketing involving the film & the camera, as a showcase of how the Nikon D90 made the film what it is, and what it means to other independent filmmakers on the horizon.

More info on this movie:

“The information I have gathered from studying the D90 and its competitors have proven to me that the D90 far surpasses the full frame Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1, and even Red’s Scarlet (based on what information has been released), which sits outside of the Digital SLR camera type and is made specifically for Cinematography.”

Nikon Coolpix compact camera with built-in projector: confirmed

After my post yesterday I received multiple tips and some blurry images of a Nikon point and shoot camera with a built-in projector. This time I will not post the pictures (don’t ask me why), but I can assure you that I can clearly see a “projector” button on the camera and an extra opening/lens on the front for the actual projector. The pictures do not appear to be photoshopped. The camera looks really small and I still wonder how they were able to include a projector in it (probably using LED technology) – this is why I did not believe the initial tip. The projector probably will be usable only for short distances. For comparison, here are some images of a portable projector for the iPhone released just few days ago (640×480 resolution, recommend distance 40 inches, 10 lumens):

Who cares about another Nikon p&s? Probably nobody here, but this rumor tells us that Nikon “still got it” and even as a big/old/traditional company, they can still innovate and implement “world’s first” ideas. I hope there will be similar surprises in the DSLR and lenses area this year. The bad news is that one of the two scheduled Nikon press-conferences will probably be for point and shoot camera(s).

Nikon compact camera with built-in projector NR probability rating: 95% (95% because even after I’ve seen the pictures, I still cannot believe they can fit a projector in a p&s camera).

Nikon related links/news/not posted rumors

Nikon related links/news:

Rumors I did not post for various reasons (till now that is):

  • Nikon HQ in Sydney:  there will be two new DSLR’s being announced soon.
  • Alibaba.com has few Nikon D400 entries for sale – I don’t think those are valid since everyone can post an item for sell on this site.
  • Nikon secret shooting in Japan (received from a reader):

I live in Tokyo, and a couple of days ago I saw a tripod setup when was walking to the ATM.  All I could see was the back screen and from the front that it was Nikon lens.  Otherwise everything was covered by cloth in a box funky hood setup.  What resonated with me though was the screen was obviously taking video BUT did not have the greyed out area on top/bottom (as is on my D90) and the screen looked to be wide screen. I regret not taking my camera!  Though the man quickly blocked my view of the screen after he realized I was watching closely. It did NOT look like a D700 body, looked like a slightly refined D300.”

The leaked Nikon D300s screenshots appeared to be in a wide-screen format as well. No way to verify this rumor.

  • Nikon compact camera with built-in projector: Nikon is about to launch a compact camera with a built-in projector, about 1hr battery life with projector on. Rough specs: 5x zoom, VR, 28-140 mm equivalent lens, 12 MP. I have hard time believing this one – I asked for some more details. We shall see.

Nikon D700x

I have received several tips from stores, Nikon reps, Nikon authorized service centers, etc about the Nikon D700x. Those tips are coming from different parts of the world and the interesting thing is that they all point to a Nikon D700x release in the Fall of 2009:

“I was at *** 2009 show earlier this year in ***, and was asking a staff member on the Nikon stand about the D700 replacement/upgrade. I was told whatever replaces it will be released in October/November 2009, but they would say no more than that.”

“My D300 is in for service at Nikon (bad aperture control module) and I asked the tech when a new dslr was being released and which one. He responded with the D700x this fall. A 24mp replacement for the D700.”

Nikon D700x NR probability rating: 40%

I believe there will be a D700 update this year, but I don’t think it will be a D3x sensor in a D700 body (would you buy one of those for $6000)? I think we will see more of the D300s type of update for the D700.
