Also coming soon: new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter

The current Nikon WT-4A wireless transmitter

I expect Nikon to announce a new WT-5 wireless transmitter with their upcoming D800 or D4 DSLR cameras – add this to the list of upcoming products. The new unit will be mountable on the camera and will be very compact. I do not have any more details at that point. I believe the current Nikon WT-4A wireless transmitter ($699) was announced back in 2007.

Nikon D800 commercial was filmed in Chicago *updated*

Downtown Chicago (public domain)

Update: see more details on the Nikon D800 commercial here.

A month ago I mentioned that the Nikon D800 promo video was shot in Chicago, but at that time I wasn’t really sure . Today I received another confirmation that this was the case. The production is now completed, which is another indication for an upcoming release – usual turnaround for commercial videos is pretty quick.

Update: This Nikon D800 commercial involved motorcycles (motorcycle mount footage). Ten different D800 cameras were used. There was a lot of high speed action and they had to shut down half the city centre.

How to lose $1200 in 25 seconds

Yes, we have that too – this is the Nikon version of the 24 seconds 5D Mark II destruction video:

“I was filming on a hot spring in Utah, when a gust of wind pushed my two months old Nikon D7000, that was mounted on a tripod, into the hot sulfur water. The lens broke off immediately so that the water and mud could enter the camera body. Mud and water all over the mirror, the sensor and so on. I destroyed 1250$ in 25 seconds and what I got in exchange was this unique footage with six weird stills after the impact “

Maybe B&H will replace this camera as well?

This is it for 2011, something big is coming in January 2012

Nikon is done with the new products announcements for 2011. Something really big is coming in January 2012 – Nikon has bought space for a LOT of ads in big photography magazines for January 2012. I know they use to advertise a lot, but in this case, the extremely high amount of ads next month is a sign that they plan to reveal something big. Since we are talking about professional photography magazines, I can only think of the D800 and maybe even the D4 and not a consumer level camera. On the lenses front, we are still waiting for a new 18-300mm DX lens and a new AF-S 85mm f/1.8 lens. The Coolpix line will also be upgraded, probably in February, with a replacement for the Nikon Coolpix P300 that will have a new 24-100mm f/1.8-2.6 equivalent lens.
