Nikon is suing ASML and Carl Zeiss over patented semiconductor lithography technology

Nikon is suing ASML and Carl Zeiss for using their chip know-how. ASML is denying that it has infringed any of Nikon’s patents. Zeiss is considering Nikon’s legal action unfounded.

Update – ASML also issued a press release on Nikon’s lawsuit, here are their main points:

  • ASML believes Nikon’s claims are without merit and will defend itself vigorously
  • This sort of unnecessary patent litigation distracts from driving technology forward for the benefit of chip makers
  • ASML has made repeated efforts to negotiate an extension of its patent cross-license agreement with Nikon
  • Nikon has not engaged seriously with ASML and has instead chosen to commence legal proceedings

Nikon N1404 camera listed again at the Indonesian Communications Agency Postel

The Nikon N1404 camera was initially registered at the Indonesian Communication Agency Postel back in 2014. The N1404 model most likely corresponds to the existing D750 DSLR camera – see page 2 of the D750 manual:


The interesting part is that the Indonesian Communication Agency Postel has a new listing for the same Nikon N1404 camera dated from yesterday (April 21st):


Could it be that Nikon is planning to make a quick refresh of the D750 by just adding SnapBridge and that’s why they are using the old N1404 code name?

The 7 Best Tricks For Nikon Cameras – Ever!

OK, I’ll concede that maybe I’m just a bit over the top with the title for this one, but hey, I really love these tricks!

You see, over the years, I have uncovered quite a few handy customizations for my Nikons and it seems like whenever I show these to people, the reaction is always the same: They immediately want to know how the heck I did those cool little tricks! Although there are dozens features I like to tweak with my Nikon’s, these seven are always towards the top of the list when a new body arrives.

In the video below, I’ll reveal these little gems, as well as go over exactly how to set them up, step by step (don’t worry, it’s easy).

Also, before we begin, it’s important to note that not all cameras will support everything shown in the video. These tips are not for the D5xxx and D3xxx series, and of limited use in the D7000, D7100, and D6xx series.

Soon you will be able to calibrate and update Samyang lenses with this new “Lens Station”

At the 2017 Seoul International Photo & Imaging Show Samyang had on display their upcoming “Lens Station” – a new USB docking station for firmware updates and customization similar to the Sigma USB Dock and Tamron TAP-In Console.

Samyang is expected to start making AF lenses for DSLR cameras.

The day the Sony a9 was announced

Today should be a day of mourning for all Nikon users and fans. Until yesterday nobody could challenge the speed of high-end DSLR cameras, but today I think Sony did just that – their new a9 camera improved many of the disadvantages of previous a7 models. It looks like the a9 will finally be a serious competitor to pro DSLR cameras like the D5, at least on paper – we still have to see how the a9 will perform in real life (Sony specs always look very nice on paper, but not as good in real life).

New Nikon in space video, search NASA’s photo archive and more

Nikon Europe published a new video:

Nikon in Space video: time-lapse view of the world | Nikon 100th Anniversary

Nikon’s history in Space began with the Nikon Photomic FTN, a modified Nikon F camera that was used aboard the Apollo 15 in 1971 and Nikon cameras have been aboard every manned space flight since. This film, edited by SmugMug Films, is a compiled time-lapse video using thousands of still images. The bright flashes are lightning strikes hitting the earth, watch and enjoy.

This is the first of many remarkable moments, both big and small, which we will be sharing in the lead up to Nikon 100th Anniversary! Stay tuned for more.


NASA launched a new website at images.nasa.gov where you can search their entire photo archive – you can spot a lot of Nikon cameras (via Petapixel).
