Nikon Coolpix P7100 will not be replaced this time around

Several readers asked me if the Nikon P7100 will be refreshed in the next round of Coolpix announcements. Nikon releases point and shoot cameras twice a year, but the different models are usually refreshed every 12 months. This time around we can expect an update of the cameras announced back in February, 2011P300, P500, S9100, L120, S6100, S3100, S4100, and L24. Later this year (usually in August) we can see new versions of the cameras announced in August, 2011: P7100, AW100, S1200pj, S8200, S6200, S4150, S6150 and S100.

Expect to see more Coolpix cameras with built-in GPS functionality.

Nikon V1 + FT1 adapter + Celestron Reflex 2000mm f/10 = 5400mm

I cannot get enough of those crazy Nikon 1 lens combinations. This setup was sent by Peter Korp and includes Nikon V1 + FT-1 adapter + Nikon T adapter + Celestron reflex 2000mm f/10 which makes this a 5400mm weapon (FX equivalent). Both objects were approximately a mile away. Electronic shutter, self timer at 10 seconds and focus magnification were used to take those two samples – the first one was captured at ISO 100, the second at ISO 800 (click on image for full res version):

Sony XQD memory cards now available for pre-order

As you probably already know, the new Nikon D4 is the first and only camera (for now) to use the new XQD memory cards. So far Sony is the only XQD cards manufacturer and Adorama just started taking pre-orders for the 16GB, 32GB versions and the new XQD card reader:

The Sony XQD cards are expected to start shipping in February 2012:

What to expect from Nikon at the CP+ show in Japan next month

New Nikon Coolpix cameras announcement before the CP+ show in Japan is guaranteed. There is a high probability that the Nikon D800 will be released as well, but I am not 100% sure yet. The website digicame-info reports that the D800 without the AA filter will cost around ¥300,000 in Japan (around $3,900) and will start shipping in mid-March 2012. The price of the D800 version with the AA filter is reported to be around $3000.

What else?

It will be a bonus if any of the lenses mentioned in this post gets introduced next month. Besides those products, I do not expect any other surprises in the next 30-60 days. I believe the D300s replacement is at least few months away and it will not be announced for the CP+ show in Japan.
