Guest post: switching from Nikon to Canon

All Rights Reserved
Today’s guest post on switching from Nikon to Canon is by Tatsu Ikeda (Website | Flickr | Facebook | Twitter):

I bought a Nikon D80 in 2008 for a vacation trip, because I simply didn’t own a camera, not even a cellphone one. Looking back, I probably bought it against Canon’s offerings because the Rebels looked pretty low-rent and the 50D was out of my budget. Because the D80 was towards end-of-life, the price was $200 less than its intro. It seemed reasonable and I remember taking hundreds of terrible photos in Argentina with a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 zoom that fell apart inside after a year. (Swore off Sigma zooms after that, but not their primes.)

Guest post: Nikon D800 captures underwater color explosions

photo_official_website
Hi NikonRumors. I’m Heath from jacandheath.com (FacebookInstagram). When Art Fairs Australia commissioned me to photograph clouds of colour underwater, I had a long learning curve ahead. I’d done a reasonable amount of in water surf photography with an Aquatech housing I’d purchase years ago for my D2x (which fits the D800 nicely with extra space for radio triggers), but I had no idea how to make a cloud of colour in an environmentally responsible way, underwater. Tests with hand-pumped sprayers filled with beetroot juice was useless and fairly expensive. The flow was slow and unimpressive, and the colour was akin to shark attack! Not to mention it was a dark colour that couldn’t be tinted.

Birds in flight with the Nikon D800

Birds in flight with the Nikon D800 6
“Birds in flight with the Nikon D800” is by Simon Speich (click on images for larger view):

The Nikon D800 is really a fantastic camera, not only for landscape and architecture. I think it’s also a wonderful wildlife or action camera thanks to the super fast and smart autofocus Multi-CAM 3500FX, which gives you sharp results even for flying birds. Paired with a 300mm f/2.8 VR II it makes a great combo to catch birds in flight without a tripod. The low number of frames per second (fps) is unfortunate, but not as problematic as some people say.
When I took the following pictures, the weather wasn’t too sunny, which was an advantage in terms of contrast, but forced me to use high ISO settings between 800 and 1250 to get exposure times above 1600 s.
