Mean, green, D850 machine (Nikon D850 camera camo conversion)

Most of you know animalsbybarry who has been deciding for months if he should buy the Nikon D850 or the Sony a7r3. Barry finally decided to go with a good ol’ DSLR even though he strongly believes the future will be mirrorless. Barry shared some pictures with me from his Nikon D850 camera camo conversion:

After a long wait I just got my Nikon D850. Straight from the box it is a rather ordinary looking camera, but I will fix that. I am sure you have seen unboxing articles before, but mine is a little different:

Nikon D500 Batterygate

A reader sent me some interesting finding regarding the Nikon D500 battery and the remaining battery capacity metering. The camera seems to have different metering of battery level than all other bodies (that use the same battery). This comparison was done with D850, D810, D750, D7200: the battery that is empty according to the D500 shows 20-25% in eg. D850 – and you can take another 150 photos with a different body. I have tried several samples of D500 and they are all about the same. Here is the full report:

Back in Antarctica

Stefan Christmann recently returned from Antarctica and after a few weeks of adapting to the real world he wrote this post about some technical aspects of shooting with Nikon gear in Antarctica. You can find Stefan’s work on his websiteInstagram and Facebook. You can check also his previous [NR] guest post (click on images for larger view):

Soft clouds are rolling in, partially covering the otherwise crystal clear sky while I am sitting in front of my computer, sipping on my freshly brewed coffee. It’s a spectacle that I have not seen in a while, but out of the scattered clouds it suddenly starts to snow. As I watch the perfect little crystals slowly descending on the ground a beam of light breaks through the increasing layer of clouds and hits my face, warming up my cheek. The snow is now backlit and looks like drops of light are raining from a busy sky. As I walk over to the window in order to lower the blinds I can spot the first flowers peeking through the surface of our front lawn. It’s almost spring time in Germany and temperatures as well as daylight hours are finally increasing again. It’s a beautiful day and consequently, my wife and I decide to pause office work and just head outside for a walk in our nearby forest. I throw on a light jacket and step outside where a mild breeze touches the skin of my face. I can effortlessly inhale the fresh air without having to fight against my balaclava. Everything is so easy quick with almost no preparation necessary – my body has completely forgotten what it feels like to be exposed to -40°C on a windy day.

TowerJazz working on a new full frame sensors with global shutter

Since the Nikon D850 was announced, some speculation started here in the comment section of the [NR] blog that the D850 sensor was manufactured by the Israeli company TowerJazz. In November last year the CEO of TowerJazz said thatIn the digital SLR market we engage with one of the leaders in the world in the development of their next-generation sensors.”

At one point Panasonic was considering to unload their shares of TowerJazz.

TowerJazz Semiconductor recently released some additional details on their foundry’s image sensor business – they are working on a new full frame sensors with global shutter (cough-cough-nikon-mirrorless):
