Another Nikon rumors recap

I put together a recap on the information I collected recently from multiple tips:

  1. It is possible that key subsidiary Nikon personnel will be traveling to Japan next week. I read somewhere that similar meeting happens in Japan every time before a major announcement.. Nikon even mentioned something similar on their Investor Relations site:
  2. “A new Medium Term Management Plan is scheduled to be announced in June 2010 by the new management team.”

  3. I am not sure if you have noticed, but multiple European Nikon websites were down in the past week – not at the same time, which could indicate that this was not a technical issue. Nikon is known for bringing their websites down for updates before an official announcement.
  4. I was told that something will be happening on weekend between July 23 – 25, 2010. This is really weird because nothing happens on weekends, unless there is an event/photo show somewhere. Another tipster mentioned that 2 DSLRs, 1 prime and 2 zoom lenses are to be announced in July as well.
  5. New set of Coolpix point and shoot cameras will be announced in August (as usual). The Coolpix S1000pj is now discontinued in the inventory system of at least one major retailer. Expect a refresh. Hopefully the rumored “high-end Coolpix compact camera” will be released as well.

As everything else on this blog, those are just rumors and in this case I cannot even give you a probability rating of this recap since it was collected form multiple sources.

Coming up next – some very interesting Nikon EVIL patents. Stay tuned!

Nikon instant rebates extended till June 26

Yes, the instant Nikon rebates have been extended in the US and will run again from June 6th – 26th, 2010 (the current program expires on May 29th – not sure if the rebates will be valid from May 29th – June 6th).

The only new addition will be the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj that will be on sale for around $299 after the rebate:

Also, new Nikon rebates program in Switzerland: the Nikon D700 is not part of the rebates this time (rebates will run from May 15th till July 31st, 2010).

The latest Nikon rumors

This information is from a new source, I have no way to verify the validity of this info:

Nikkor 135mm f/2 AF-S G N VRII

  • Both f/1.8 and f/2 versions prototyped
  • No DC feature – apparently most of the subtlety regarding the feature in the existing can be replicated in post.
  • No word what so ever of a 105mm sibling.
  • Provide a significant step up in sharpness over the existing old design

Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 AF-S G N VRII

  • It has been tested in the field and will be released in the next couple of months. Incidentally the announced Sigma, especially the MTF caused some waves…

Mirrorless Nikon

  • 1″ (25.4mm) sensor (2.7x crop)
  • This will just be a concept announcement at Photokina (if at all!) – you are not getting your hands on one of these till 2011.
  • Be prepared for a pleasant surprise when it comes to the image quality and the form factor!

My comments:

Update: here are the MTF charts for the current (AF) Nikon 85mm f/1.4 (left) and the new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 (right):

Update #2: as some of the readers already noted there is a link between the 1″ sensor and 17mm lens image diameter see this table on wikipedia – a type 1″ sensor has a diagonal of 16mm which should fit perfectly in the 17mm lens image diameter.

Nikon instant rebates program will end this Saturday (US)

The current Nikon instant rebates (US) will expire this Saturday (May 29th, 2010). It will be interesting to see if they will be extended for another month (FYI: the rebate program got extended twice already – it was initially introduced in March of 2010).

Nikon reps in Europe continue to deny any D700 replacement in 2010

In the past few days I received a new wave of email rumors (mainly from Europe) indicating that the Nikon D700 will not be replaced in 2010. The main sources are Nikon reps who spread it to various dealers around Europe. I have never received such a high amount of identical tips on the same topic, which I find to be very odd. It almost looks like this was a well orchestrated campaign, since I don’t believe Nikon reps have access to such information. The only way I could see this to be true is if Nikon releases a new line of full frame DSLR cameras which will not be considered to be a D700 replacement. Non of my reliable sources have confirmed this rumor.
