Nikon D3s, “the unicorn”

Today even Engadget chimed in on the lack of Nikon D3s stock in various stores and this the official word they got from a Nikon spokesman:

“A company spokesperson has told us this week that there’s nothing more to blame than extraordinary demand, seeing how a single factory produces units for the entire world”

The rumor mill says otherwise: the first rumor I heard was that the delay (at least in Europe) was caused by that volcano with the weird name in Iceland. The second tip I received recently is even crazier:

“I was talking to the Nikon rep at the *** today and he told me that one reason for the shortage of various Nikon items in Europe at the moment is the ‘loss’ (possible theft) of a shipping container full of Nikon equipment whilst in transit from the Far East.”

Maybe pirates? They was another tip few weeks ago (from a different source) that a container with Nikon SB-600 flashes got damage during transport.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM gets a price

The new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is priced @ $899 in the US and is currently available for pre-order.

Here is a brief specs comparison with the current Nikon AF 85mm f/1.4D IF (I will repeat this comparison once the new Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.4 lens gets released – hopefully by then we will also have sample photos to compare):

Nikon D700 availability

Those are just some of the email I received in the past few days on the Nikon D700 availability around the world. I also got some conflicting info that a fresh D700 shipment is expected in Germany in 2 weeks. Here is the rest:

“I work at *** and the D700 is listed in our inventory program as “Soon to be discontinued, short supply”.  Thought I could let you know since it seems the same thing is happening in Germany.  I will check on Tuesday if I can order it at all, I’m guessing I can but this message usually means we are down to our chains inventory warehouse and when we use that up its done.”

“I travel a lot with work so often wander into the Dixon Store to see what gadgets are there to play with. I asked if they had a D700 I could have a look at, unfortunately they didn’t and a check on the stock levels of the Terminal 3 store, all national Curry Stores (the high street sister brand to Dixon’s) and the Dixons Warehouses should that they had zero stock. I asked if I could order one or if they would be back in stock? She replied that they had been marked down as clearance and that no new stock would be ordered. She added that this normally happens when a model is due to be replaced and this was also clear by the pricing, at £1699.97. Apparently products that  are priced XXXX.97 are clearance where as XXXX.99 are not.”

“I asked them what hints they may have regarding any D700 replacement and they said that they can still get the D700. However, they tried to place an order for a few hundred D700’s not long ago and were told by the Nikon rep that they could not supply that many. Nikon’s reps etc. have all recently switched from Windows to Mac which they saw as a move towards video since video software is much more easily to come by / work with in the Mac environment than with Windows.  They also said that video is the hot topic with the (store) buyers etc. so that they anticipated that any D700 replacement would surely have video included. From their past experience, they said that they expected an announcement in the next month or two.”

2 Nikon D90 cameras, 3D portraits

Alex Fry and Jamie Nimmo will have a 3D photography exhibition “Stereo Portrait Project” in Sydney Australia on 27th May (scroll down for the full press release).

Here is the technical background:

For the Stereo Portrait Project, we used off the shelf hardware and software, from the cameras, lighting, triggering, post production to the printing of the book. We shot using Nikon d90’s with shutter cables connected to an RF trigger. The Lighting system was three Nikon sb900’s, one connected via pc sync in a soft box, the other two optically slaved.

A custom camera rig was needed to put the cameras as close together as possible, roughly emulating the distance between the human eyes. There was no quick or cheap solution to do this, so we built a number of prototypes out of wood and brackets. Since we were taking portraits, having the cameras mounted vertically base to base made the most sense, giving us a relatively small interoccular and a vertical frame. We ended up making three versions of the rig, the first to test how the base plates attach to the cameras, a hand held version that was unwieldy to hold and the final tripod mounted version you see in the pictures.

To synchronize the cameras we used an RF trigger split out to two preload shutter release cables. We tested how fast we could sync both shutters together with the flashes, and got reliable sync up to 1/160 speed. Giving us the ability to have people move around, talk to us and not inhibit their performance. This was very important since hands in front of the body look fantastic in 3d.

The image pairs were then sorted using Aperture before being exported into Nuke, where final tweaks were made before combining them into the final Anagylphic 3D images.

Aperture made sorting and tagging hundreds of very similar left and right images much more manageable, while Nuke allowed us to simply adapt many of the same 3d workflows we use in our day jobs as stereoscopic visual effects compositors.

Eyewitness report: Nikon D700 cannot be ordered in Germany

In addition to previous reports that the Nikon D700 is being phased out (see here, here and here), today I received another one (this time from Germany):

“I just went into my local store in ***, Germany today to check if they have a D700 in stock. Unfortunately, they did not and when I asked the employee to order one he ran into some problems. Apparently, he could not order new bodies nor the kit D700+24-70 from Nikon because the D700 was listed as “Auslaufmodell” which is German for something like “out of date” or a camera which is soon to be replaced. The employee told me that he will call Nikon on Tuesday morning (there is a holiday on Monday in Germany) and ask what is going on with the D700.  When I asked him about a possible replacement for the D700 (D700s?) he did not have any information for me. I will write to you on Tuesday when I have more information about this, maybe it is just an error in the stores ordering software…”

I’ve said already that I am not a believer of the “no D700 replacement in 2010” rumor (on some Internet boards this rumor goes even further indicating that no new Nikon DSLRs will be released in 2010).
