More on the white housing NASA uses on their Nikon cameras *UPDATED*

On several occasions NASA has published pictures of Nikon cameras covered in special white housing. Few days ago, I tweeted the picture above but did not know much about it. PopPhoto contacted NASA and got some more details:

“What is all of that extra equipment under the white shroud?

The equipment under the thermal blanket is a Nikon SB-800 flash in a custom housing that is used during a spacewalk (EVA). The flash needed a special housing because it will not work properly in the vacuum of space. The housing holds air pressure so that the flash will function properly. There is also a bracket on the bottom (covered with a white thermal blanket) that the camera and flash mount to.

Nikon to re-introduce GPS in their Coolpix cameras

Built-in GPS in the old Nikon Coolpix P6000 camera (from 2008)

Nikon’s P6000, that was announced back in 2008, had a built-in GPS but for some reason Nikon did not continue this trend in later models. If I am not mistaken, currently there are no Nikon cameras with built-in GPS capabilities. This is about to change next month, as Nikon is about to announce it’s first rugged compact camera that will have GPS capabilities.

Information of upcoming p&s cameras is flowing, but still no reliable info on other products. It will be interesting to see if GPS will be added also in future Nkon DSLR cameras.

Nikon currently offers the GP-1 GPS unit as an accessory for DSLR cameras.

New full frame Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens will probably come in a Nikon mount

Update: the Noktor HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens will come with a Leica M mount.

Few days ago, Noktor tweeted about a new full frame HyperPrime 50mm f/0.95 lens that is currently being tested. The exact mount is not yet known, but I have the feeling that Nikon F-mount will be one of the options. Noktor currently has a poll on their website about a potential 50mm f/0.95 lens for Nikon/Canon mounts. The new lens can be used on mFT and NEX cameras via adapter. The lens will have round aperture opening instead of hexagon shape, slide out hood and a metal ring around the lens. This will be a full frame lens and obviously will be different from the current APS-C version. The marking on the front reads “Made in Japan”.

Nikon P7100 will be the third Coolpix camera announced next month

In addition to the P1200pj and the new Coolpix rugged camera, Nikon will announce also a new and improved P7100 which will replace the current P7000. This will be the new top of the line point and shoot camera from Nikon. Improvements include a tiltable LCD screen (like the one on the P100), additional controls, new HDR and easy panorama functions.

This is how the tiltable screen of the Nikon Coolpix P100 looks like:

It has begun: Nikon announcement on August 24th

Nikon has scheduled several press events in different countries on August 24th, 2011. This is now 100% confirmed from several different sources. Nikon did not have any scheduled press event for the last 50 f/1.8 and 40mm f/2.8 lenses, which makes the next announcement more important than the previous two. The new Coolpix cameras may be announced a week earlier (probably on August 17th) because Nikon likes to separate the introduction of pro and consumer products.
