Thanakha faces from Burma

One of the first things most people seem to notice when arriving for the first time in Burma is the centuries old, uniquely Burmese tradition known as Thanakha.

What fascinates me as a professional photographer is how beautiful and unique this form of cosmetic artistry is. Unlike most western cosmetic schemes that seem to have as the ultimate goal making everyone look the same, Thanakha is a wonderfully Burmese extension of the wearers unique personality and attitude.

At once both bold and subtle, Thanakha (pronounced Te-naw-Ká) is a yellowish-white paste made by mixing fine sawdust from the branches of the Shwebo Thanakha or Shinmadaung Thanakha trees and water. These trees grow in abundance in the central valley of Burma.

Using the Nikon D4s for wildlife photography by Aaron Baggenstos

Nikon-D4s-digital-camera
As a professional wildlife photographer who spends over 100 days a year in the field working with clients and leading workshops I require the highest standards from my camera equipment. I’ve been shooting with the new Nikon D4s for several weeks now and am continually amazed by its remarkable capabilities.

I’ve demonstrated my 3 favorite new features in the video below including Nikon’s new group area auto-focusing mode, video shot at 1080p 60fps, and time-lapse photography created with the aid of exposure smoothing:

Since shooting this video I had a chance to photograph wild raptors (owls, eagles, and hawks) alongside clients on my annual Raptors of Eastern Washington Photo Tour. Here are a few images from this weekend (see attached images):

Next Nikon announcement rumored for May 15th

nikon-press-center
Nikon is rumored to have a new product announcement on May 15th. I expect this press event to be for the Nikon 1 S2 camera (14.2 MP sensor with 73 phase detection and 135 contrast detection AF points). Keep in mind that the S2 may not be launched for the US market. I am not sure if Nikon will also introduce the new Coolpix P700 and Coolpix P8000 compact cameras or there will be another Coolpix announcement at the end of the month.

Nikon’s Video Remote Control System from 1962

Nikon-Video-Remote-Control-System
In 1962 Nikon produced the Video Remote Control System that could capture images on film and record video signal. This was a combination of a still and video camera into one (similar to the modern DSLRs today). The system even had an early type of ‘live view’ system with 800-line high-resolution 2:1 interlaced closed-circuit television system:
