Weekly Nikon related news/links #71

  • A word about the ISO in the Nikon D90 replacement: (I am still not convinced about the D95 name, so I will continue to call it the “Nikon D90 replacement”) I think we can now be confident about the previously rumored “D700-like” ISO in the D90 successor – we saw already that the Nikon D3100 will have a 100 – 12800 ISO range. I will go even a step further and guess that the ISO of the D90 replacement could be even higher, up to 25600 ISO. That way, there will be a clear distinction between both models (besides the MP count – the new D90 will have 16MP). For the record, this is just a speculation – Nikon may keep all consumer models in the 100-12800 ISO range and increase the ISO performance for the D300s replacement next year.
  • Lightroom 3.2 and Camera Raw 6.2 released candidates are out. New Nikon profiles were added in Lightroom for 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6, 16-35mm f/4, 50mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.8 and few Sigma and Zeiss lenses with F-mount.

New button/lever on the Nikon D3100

There seems to be a new button/lever on the Nikon D3100 picture from “Foto Digital” – maybe for direct video recording? On previous Nikon models you had to switch first to Live View and then start video recording.

Nikon AF-S 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 lens discontinued

The full frame Nikon AF-S 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED VR lens is listed as discontinued on Nikon Japan website (生產終了 means discontinued, end of life). No surprise here, since a new Nikkor 24-120 f/4 ED VR N lens is expected to be released next week. The old 24-120mm lens had multiple negative reviews over the past few years (the lens was announced back in February, 2003). This lens was also part of the D700 kit.

Nikon D90, D700 out of stock at BestBuy’s district warehouse

I would expected the Nikon D90 to be out of stock, but why the D700? Both bodies are listed as 0 inventory in one of the district warehouses, which serves around 400-600 BestBuy stores. The out of stock date for the D90 is September 7th, 2010 and for the D700 is August 3, 2010:

This is the fix for the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 light leak

SLRclub has a thread about the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 light leak and it seems that this is the official fix from Nikon – they are just using a wider AF scale plate that will provide a better protection from an outside light source:

Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD lens for Nikon mount announced again

Tamron’s press releases are a little tricky: back in March, they announced the “development” of a new Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) lens, which will be available also for Nikon mount. Today Tamron announced “the release” of that same lens. The price is $449.99 minus $50 rebate @ Amazon (here is the rebate form). This lens should be a direct competition to the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR which sells for over $500. If you shoot with a DX camera and are on the market for a similar focal length, you may want to wait till next week for the rumored Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ED VR DX lens which should be priced around $350.

Full press release after the break:
