DxoMark published their test results for the Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera. This is their conclusion on the V2:

Overall, the regression in performance, when compared to the Nikon 1 V1, suggest this camera is not as good a buy as the V1 – its results were simply underwhelming. If you already own a Nikon 1 V1 and are thinking of an upgrade, then you’ll probably find more benefit in waiting for the next iteration to see what that brings, as the V2 will not give you appreciably better images over what you have already. If you are in the market for a new hybrid type camera, then you may find benefit looking elsewhere if you want the best image quality. Within this area, the major contenders for other models to consider are the Canon EOS M, the Olympus EPL5, the Sony NEX 6 and the Pentax K01.

DxOMark also tested the Nikon AF-S DX 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens – as expected, the Nikon version scored higher than the equivalent lenses from Tamron and Sigma:

Inhale fresh air, smell the refreshing scent of pine forests glowing green above black volcano sands, no sound but the wind in century old trees.

You’ve been hiking the last two days and have camped a starry night at the 2450 m high Caldera de Taburiente, worlds largest erosion crater.

Nikon patents a digital back for 35mm film SLR cameras

This is probably the most interesting Nikon patent since I started my coverage in 2008: last year Nikon filed a patent (2012-242615) in Japan for a digital back that will transform a 35mm film SLR camera into a DSLR. The sensor is attached to the camera’s back panel and by replacing it, you will be able to get the digital solution many have dreamed for years (digital FM2 anyone?). Since the back panel is detachable, the switch between film and digital SLR will be simple and fast. The patent application is current – it was filed on May 19, 2011 and was published a week ago (December 10, 2012). In the patent Nikon describes a mechanism for adjusting/fine-tuning the flange distance with a screw located on the digital back. Here are few paragraphs from the actual patent application I copied directly from the Japanese IPDL database (machine translated):

Did Polaroid copy the Nikon 1 design for their new Android based interchangeable lens camera?

Polaroid is rumored to announce a new Android based interchangeable lens camera which should be irrelevant to this blog, but if you look at the leaked picture, the Polaroid IM1836 looks very much like the Nikon 1 J1/J2 cameras. Even the lens design and focal length (30-110mm) are very similar to the Nikkor 1 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 lens.
