Thom Hogan’s 2009 Nikon predictions

Here are the main points:

  • “Something not called D3x” – in late 2008 or early 2009. Oops, I just wrote in my last post that the next D3 will be called D3x. I still stand behind my sources.
  • New Nikon D60 in spring of 2009.
  • “A limited edition Nikon: likely a D3 sensor in an SP-like camera”. NR reported the same rumor few weeks ago – here is the post. I personally find this one very interesting, I hope it really comes to life.
  • D400 plus video – released late in the year (2009).
  • Lenses: new DX lenses, primes – 28 (yes!), 85, 200mm and yes a new 70-200mm.

Nikon D3x – 90% certantity if I have to put it in numbers

Based on the information I have received from multiple sources from around the world, I am now 90% certain  that we will see the new Nikon D3x by the end of this month. I keep getting the end of November or December 1st as a potential release date. I still do not know what will happen on November 20th. The new model will be called Nikon D3x (not D4) and it will have more MP (as expected).

The above statement is purely based on emails/tips I have been receiving in the past few days. The frequency and quality of the reports has definitely picked up. Of course this could be all just wishful thinking and speculation based on previous information posted on this blog.

I am still evaluating the best way to represent such an increase Nikon rumors chatter. Maybe I will introduce a Nikon Rumors Advisory System (similar to Homeland Security Advisory System).

The current level of Nikon rumors chatter would be HIGH.

Nikon support rep reveals the secret of MX?

There is this post on dpreview, which is very hard for me to believe. Apparently, a Nikon tech support rep revealed a lot of info about the release of a new MX camera this month:

  • November 20th announcement
  • Bigger than FF sensor
  • Available two weeks after announcement
  • The body will be the size of D700
  • New pro MX lens

I call this one busted right up front.

Nikon D90 buffer upgrade for 1080 HD video

I received an anonymous email stating that beginning December 1st, the Nikon D90 will get a buffer upgrade that will cost around $30. The upgrade will allow 5 minutes of 1080 resolution HD video. It will also have upgraded firmware that will allow the new MP-7 microphone (?) to be plugged in via the USB port and get activated in the camera. A new microphone adapter to plug in any microphone will be also available.

If this was an $300 upgrade for the D700 (especially the microphone part), I would probably believe it, but for the D90? I don’t know… What do you think?

Nikon D3 price drop

Nikon D3 price drop: B&H is now selling it for $4,198.95! Coincidence? You will have to add it to the cart to see the low price.

Nikon D80 is now discontinued from Adorama and B&H (automatically redirect to D90)- if you want one, you better hurry up (Amazon still has it).

I also updated the complete price watch section today.

Nikon Germany, what is Nikon D3_2?

Is there going to be a new Nikon D3 soon? Nikon Germany thinks so – they already have a placeholder named “Nikon D3_2”:

We will be seeing more leaks in the next few weeks, in anticipation for the November 20th world wide Nikon event.
