Nikon US government discount

I was not aware of this program, so I decided to share it with everyone: if you work for the government, you can get a discount on Nikon products (I am not sure if this is specific to the military only or it is valid for any government agency). Here a post from a reader:

“No big secret, I just special ordered it through the exchange. I got my D200, D300, D3, and D90 all through them. The D200 and D3 I saved hundreds on each and got both when they were first announced and shipped to me in the Middle East each time. I have been pretty lucky with the discounts. When I got the D200 18-200 Kit I got 10% off of list and then and additional 10% off of that. The Nikon rep personally went to NY and yanked me one from another shipment when they found out I was in Iraq. The D3 I got 10% off on and got for 4500 when it came out as well. Nikon ships direct to you through the exchange program so its quick and when I got back from Iraq with my D200 and it was all beat to heck and outside of warranty by 2 weeks, they took it in and had it back to me a week later free of charge and looking brand new. Nikon has me as a customer for life.

Way to go Nikon!

Nikon D3x on eBay

Update (12.21.08): the price is now up to USD 7,300 with 36 bids. I did not expect it to go that high. Another day of bidding left.

Cameta Camera is currently selling a D3x on eBay. The starting bid was 99 cents. The current price is USD 5,000.

I guess they are testing the water to see how much are buyers wiling to pay. If it is true that the dealer’s cost for D3x is USD 6,500 we should see a USD 7,000 price in two months.

Nikon D3x is out

The news of the day: Nikon D3x is out. So far, no black dots or other nasty surprises. I could not find any interesting reviews or test shots yet (besides another Alpha 900 and DX3 raw file noise comparison). There was a small D3x registration problem on Nikon’s website and that’s about it.

A reader pointed out something interesting: the included scan is from a D3 product brochure, printed in December 2007. On Page 26 there are the different design samples shown – the image is also available online:

The crop shows obviously the D3 but the label clearly has an ‘x’ after the D3. As you can see this is not the D2x (click on image for better view). Nikon gave us a clear sign of the upcoming D3x last year, but we could not figure it out, lol. Thanks Guido!

National Geographic + Nikon D90 + Microsoft = Apple ignorance

From National Geographic:

“The Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial, and Midnight Lightning at Yosemite. Three amazing subjects seen best in rich three-dimensional spaces, stitched together to create a 360 degree view! National Geographic is partnering with Nikon to present American Wonder…three iconic locations at your fingertips with Microsoft’s Photosynth application.”

Very cool right? Now, try to view those photosynths on a Mac. Eeeeh!

Nikon F6 R.I.P.

According to this post at photo.net Nikon have stopped producing their legendary Nikon F6 film SLR.

Few months ago Michio Kariya (Nikon Corp. President) said that Nikon will concentrate on high-end digital SLR cameras.

Adorama currently does not have the Nikon F6 listed on their web page. B&H has it in stock for $1,999.95. Amazon: currently unavailable.

No one should be surprised from that move, but I still want to know how many of our readers purchased a Nikon film SLR in the past 12 months.
