Nikon D3x – what do we have so far

Few days left until the potential release date. This is what we have so far:

  • Everything started with a D3 firmware update back in April that revealed a new 6048×4032 24.4 MP option (source).
  • Nikon has scheduled several events world wide for December 1st (see here, here and here).
  • Few weeks ago Nikon Germany created a placeholder on their web site called Nikon D3_2. After we reported it, the folder was promptly removed.
  • Then we have leaks/hints from a Nikon tester, Thom Hogan and jeff-c and Iliah Borg.
  • The price of Nikon D3 dropped significantly to $4,200. There was also a rumor that retailers could not place D3 orders anymore.
  • In the past few months we had a bunch of products “designed” for D3x: Delkin, Sea& Sea, SanDisk and a HoodCap (yes! – what should we do without it). Maybe this is all just sloppy marketing.

I also received about a dozen of emails from around the world about the D3x coming on December 1st (mainly from retailers). That’s all we have for now. Nothing solid, but sufficient for me to still believe that there is a 90% chance we will see a D3x on December 1st (hopefully with a Kodak sensor – this is my own speculation).

Now the latest rumor from dpreview:

“D3x is what’s expected, but also to be announced:

80-400 AF-S version

35mm 1.8 AF-S

135mm 1.8 AF-S”

And now… RED again:
Red is suppose to have an even bigger announcement on December 3rd – the only reason I am mentioning this is because Red cameras can also be used with Nikon lenses. Red called their last announcement “insignificant”. If they come up with a DSLR-like camera and a reasonable price tag, Nikon (and every other big DSLR manufacturer will be in serious trouble). Update: WOW! Just in the few hours since I posted this, we surpassed Gizmodo (our score is now 152, Gizmodo is 91)! Unfortunately, I was late to register for some of the other categories, where I am sure we would have some tougher competition. Voting for selected finalists is scheduled to begin December 8, 2008. Finalists will be announced several days before voting begins. Stay tuned and thanks again for your support!

If you like NR, please cast your vote for the 2008 Weblog Awards by going to this link, scroll down to the NikonRumors.com entry and click the green + score sign under the NikonRumors nomination (Best Small Major Blog category):

Thanks!

Nikon’s Black Friday sale reveal a new lens?

Go to http://www.nikonusa.com/blackfriday/ and look at the lower right (those are btw Nikon’s Black Friday specials – US only):

16-185 VR? I say this is a typo – 16-85 VR is an existing lens (and this is actually a good deal). If you open the pdf file, the lens is listed as 16-85 VR.

Intel & Nikon photo competition – AF-S 50mm f/1.4G with Nano?

Intel & Nikon “Build for Speed” photo competition from down under is now ongoing – here is the link (thanks GT).

This promotion provides also a series of tutorials. Of course I watched them all and I found something interesting in the first video: Jasin Boland shows his new Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens and he clearly says “with Nano Crystal” (half way trough the first video). The official press release did not mention anything about this lens being a “N” lens (with Nano Crystal Coat). A mistake or a new lens?

Online petition

Nikon’s latest DVD Creative Lighting System (hands-on guide) is only available in the US. A reader from Canada contacted Nikon on this matter and this is the response he got:

Hello xxxx, … It is not that Nikon Canada won’t sell the DVD, we can’t sell it as we do not have distribution rights. … Regards, xxxx.

What? I thought Nikon is a global company. In today’s economic crisis it is hard for me to believe that they will pass on the extra revenue.

NikonRumors has readers from all over the world and I cannot accept the fact that they will not have access to this excellent product (I ordered mine already). Few days ago I started an online petition to distribute the Creative Lighting System (hands-on guide) world wide. It is very important to note that I (we) do not want to hurt the company we love, so let’s make sure we keep it civilized and stick only to the online petition. I will try to contact Nikon and see if I can get an official response. Few other sites/blogs have also raised their concern on that topic – I will contact them to join this petition.

Anyway, sorry for the long post – here is the petition (facebook sign-up also available). Please sign it and spread the word – the direct petition link is:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/NikonDVD

Update: Strobist has expressed similar concerns about the distribution of this video.
Update #2: Please don’t post any bittorrent links. I do consider bittorrent illegal (not to mention unethical) and I will not host any related links. Thanks for your understanding.
