Nikon rep: two DSLRs will be announced by the end of August

This is the email I received from a reader describing a recent Nikon event organized for major authorized dealers in a country I will not mention online in order not to get anyone in trouble:

They essentially explain what happened with Nikon since March 11th (earthquake, tsunami, Fukushima, etc.) and what major decisions have been taken since concerning the product plants situated in the area.

They told us that most of the machines have been moved to a new plant in Malaysia and most of the employees have been moved as well with some monetary compensation. Then, some photo slides of the Malaysian plant have been shown. The new facility is already producing cameras and lenses. Expect to see “Made in Malaysia” Nikon product very soon.

This one didn’t make it: Nikon D3s get crashed by a Ford pickup truck

I had my D3s w/28-300 for 89 days. May 26, 2011 I had just finished taking pictures of a cropduster flying on rice seed, and backed my pickup up along the field road to a “T” where I could back in and pull forward. I placed the D3s on the seat next to me with the strap around a secure item to prevent it from falling on the floor. I had just begun driving forward and straightening onto the road (between a rice field and a drainage ditch) when my Ford F-150 (also about 90 days old, 5800 miles) suddenly “fell out from underneath me.” While I am falling, I realized my pickup was rolling onto the driver side into the ditch. I watched as my D3s fell past me, out my open drivers window and into the mud. I was thinking, “oh shit, the cab is going to crush my camera!”

Nikon Micro 40mm f/2.8 lens patents (updated)

Update: Nikon’s lens patent 20110170195 seems to have the correct lens diagram for the recently announced AF-S DX Micro 40mm f/2.8G lens. The patent got published online just two days after the lens got announced! (thanks Astrophotographer)

A reader asked me if Nikon has previously filed any patents for the recently announced AF-S DX Micro 40mm f/2.8G lens. I searched older patents posts and came across two different entries for a 40mm f/2.8 lens:

Nikon was granted a patent 7656591 for a 40mm f/2.8 lens in 2010, the patent was filed in 2007:

The second patent 2010-204621 (filed in Japan on 02/03/2009) was for a 40mm f/2.8 and 60mm f/3.8 macro lenses but the initial guess was that those designs are for a mirrorless camera because of the 17mm image circle:
