Hacked: time limit during video recording now removed for the Nikon D3100/D5100/D7000

In addition to the Nikon D3100 and D5100, the Nikon Hacker team was able to remove the time limit restriction during video recording also for the D7000. The new firmware was tested and is now released – it allows for 25-30 minutes uninterrupted video files (up to 4GB in file size). For instruction and download links, check this post. Please note that this is not an official firmware update from Nikon – use at your own risk.

The external Wi-Fi module for the Nikon D3200 will be called WU-1a

The additional Wi-Fi module for the upcoming Nikon D3200 DSLR camera will be called WU-1a. My understanding is that this new device will also allow direct image transfer from the D3200 to a smart phone, even when there is no existing Wi-Fi network. This will let you share/upload images from your smart phone (similar to a Eye-Fi card). This new feature will work for Android devices as well. I assume there will be a new app that will work together with the WU-1a and will serve as a remote camera control/image uploader.

Guest post: Aerial drone photography – when your camera flies without you

Today’s guest post on taking photographs with an aerial drone is by Frédéric Moix (website | gallery).

2011 and 2012 saw big improvements in the RC field, new technologies, new batteries, making the ability to lift a heavier DSLR camera more accessible. The interest is obvious: aerial photography is closer to buildings, objects, rock formations, etc. With this “close aerial photography” or “low altitude aerial photography” you can discover new angles of view for a fraction of the cost of the classical aerial photography performed by planes and helicopters.

It’s going to be interesting to see the abilities of the new WT-5 wireless transmitter for remote images transmission from an aerial drone.

Nikon 3D mirrorless digital camera?

reader sent me this picture of what appears to be a twin lens 3D mirrorless digital camera – it was taken at the 4th Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta (Malaysia). Reportedly, the camera had a Nikon label on the back. Has anyone seen this camera? Could this be an old film model?
