Capture NX 2.1.1 changes in this version:

– Support for RAW images captured with the D3X has been added.
– When images containing GPS information captured with another manufacturer’s digital camera were opened, GPS information was not displayed.  This issue has been resolved.
– When RAW images captured with another manufacturer’s lens and the camera’s Vignette control item in the shooting menu set to any option other than Off were opened, Capture NX 2 sometimes froze.  This issue has been resolved.
– When attempting to open 16-bit monochrome TIFF (LZW) images, Capture NX 2 quit unexpectedly.  This issue has been resolved.
– When attempting to open some images saved in NEF format using Nikon Capture or Capture NX Ver. 1.x, Capture NX 2 quit unexpectedly.  This issue has been resolved.
– When images were opened in Capture NX 2 Ver. 2.0.0 when the optional Picture Controls were not installed, and image Picture Control setting was modified and then a settings file saved, Picture Control settings were not accurately reflected when the settings file was applied to images later opened in Capture NX 2 Ver. 2.1.0 where the optional Picture Controls were installed.  This issue has been resolved.
– When attempting to save enhancements applied to images in some system environments, the enhancements were not saved.  This issue has been resolved.
– When multiple images were opened and white balance adjusted for each image using the Set Gray Point option under White Balance in the Camera Settings palette, an error message was displayed when clicking on the image after clicking the Start button.  This issue has been resolved.
– When Color Noise Reduction under Noise Reduction was adjusted and the image saved in NEF format, Color Noise Reduction effects were removed when the image was again opened and the Noise Reduction check box unchecked and then checked again when logged in to a Windows user account with a user name containing 2-byte characters.  This issue has been resolved.

Nikon is co-funding a 3D R&D project in Japan

The article is rather technical, so you can just read the whole story here. I wonder what direct benefit would Nikon get out of this research – will we see a Nikon 3D camera in the near future?

FYI – Fuji is planning to release a 3D camera next year.

Fun stuff

I am sure by now everyone has seen the Hitler video and the D700 cake pictures (and another one). Here is something else – a spy lens that allows you to shoot at a 90 degree angle:

This is basically a periscope lens extension for US $50. Check also the product video here.

Nikon rumors from around the web

This is a recap of the online Nikon rumors from the past few days – none of those stories sound promising enough to get their own post. Thanks to everyone that has sent me tips and please don’t get offended if I don’t post your submission – I am still accumulating the leads and once I see a pattern, I will pull the trigger.

  • The camera stores in Italy have some kind of a video interactive tool that displays specs and prices of Nikon equipment. NikonCafe reported that the following lenses were not listed:
  1. 85 F/1.8 AND 85 F/1.4
  2. 105 F/2
  3. 135 F/2
  4. 180 F/2.8
  5. 200 F/4
  • dpreview: a new rumor about a new, compact 70-200 f/2.8 Nikkor without VR in the price range of 700$. Too good to be true. Update: busted – this was about the new Tamron lens, not Nikon.
  • Another “hint” from dpreview – what’s coming in 2009:
  1. AF-S Zoom Nikkor 16-35 f2.8 ED IF N ( could be 17-40 T.B.A. ).
  2. AF-S 80-400 f4-5.6 ED VRII
  3. AF-S Nikkor 28 f2 ED N
  4. AF-S VRII Micro Nikkor 200 f4 IF ED N
  5. and one new flash and one maybe two mid to low range camera bodies.

Nikon D3x ad = Nikon MX ad?

I was watching this video about the Nikon D3x (btw they mention again the release to be December 19th) and I noticed the screen in the background.

Does this Nikon D3x promotional video remind you of something? Remember the Nikon MX leak from two months ago – a Nikon mount emerging from the dark with the word “BIG” next to it? Does this mean that the “BIG” Nikon event in February next year will be about the D3x? I think so. Will we ever see a medium format Nikon camera? I don’t know.
