Nikon S60 ads

I love Nikon ads. We will be slow on rumors in the next few weeks, so I will go off the topic. Here are some pics from the latest Nikon S60 ad campaign (click to see full res for full effect):

The third one is not for corporate surfers – open at your own risk.

You can check the Nikon ads tag for more related material.

Nikon ViewNX 1.2.2 now available

Nikon ViewNX 1.2.2 is now available for download – Windows only. Where is the Mac version? Do we have a problem with Apple again?

Modifications:

  • Support for RAW images captured with the D3X was added.
  • Support for D3X Picture Control was added.
  • NRW-format RAW images captured with the COOLPIX P6000 can now be edited.
  • The effects of lateral chromatic aberration compensation exhibited when the RAW button is pressed to develop NEF- or NRW-format RAW images for display, file conversion, and printing have been improved over those of the previous version.
  • When the Data Execution Prevention function (DEP) under Windows XP (Service Pack 3) and Windows Vista (Service Pack 1) was set to Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:, ViewNX sometimes quit unexpectedly with certain system environments.  This issue has been resolved.
  • When attempting to print Help information by selecting Print the selected heading and all subtopics from the Print Topics dialog, Help information was not properly printed.  This issue has been resolved.
  • When images captured at a white balance setting of Auto and an image quality setting of NRW (RAW) are processed using ViewNX, the results achieved with ViewNX RAW processing may differ from those achieved with in-camera NRW (RAW) processing.

Rumor: Nikon D90 firmware upgrade coming next week

Next week Nikon should release a new firmware for the Nikon D90 according to this email I received today:

“Nothing crazy. Some interface improvements. Apparently an ISO tweak. There’s nothing that can be done
about the Jello Video thing… It’s a hardware problem, that will probably be there even in the next couple of
generations of SLR w/ video models. But there will be a slight improvement in the d-movie compression. It seems that the compression on the blue channel is too high, thus causing the stair-stepping. And there will be a compression rate selector deep in the menus. and……as far as I know, that’s it.

Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens now shipping

Few lucky people have already received their Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens and brag about it on dpreview. Bjorn Rorslett has already posted a review of this lens – he rates it 5 out of 5.

For now Adorama and B&H are still only taking pre-orders.

Update: Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G samples available here and here.

Celebration!

Nikon beating Canon to the #1 spot in DLSR sales:

“Number one for share by volume in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan.”

“Nikon’s DSLR sales growth expand by 333 percent, compared 2004/05 figures.”

333%! I guess Nikon do know what they are doing with their pricing strategy, so let’s just stop the bashing and wait to see what will happened with the Nikon D3x.

This is a reason for a celebration! Just do this dance, wherever you are, right now:

Nikon D3x sensor – made by Sony, designed by Nikon

Update: On December 1, 2008 Nikon USA issued a correction to the pixel pitch specification, restating it as 5.94µm – the same as the A900?. This is just getting better by the minute…

This is the first official statement that I came across regarding the Nikon D3x sensor origin (if you can trust CNET):

“Nikon officials were at pains to point out that although the D3X’s sensor is manufactured in a Sony plant, it’s still very much a Nikon designed sensor”.

The only difference mentioned in the article is the respective pixel pitches: 5.9 microns on the A900, 5.49 microns on the D3x. If you don’t know what this means – check this article about sensors and pixel pitches.
