Nikon Wekend @ J&R

J&R has a Nikon Weekend from Jan 16-18 with some really good deals. It seems that they still have their lenses on the old prices and many are in stock. If you are in NYC check their in-store flyer.

J&R is also holding a series of free seminars at lunchtime. Light healthy snacks will be served 🙂

Circuit city liquidation sale begins today – check it out, they may have some good Nikon deals. I guess Nikon will never get their $14,926,445 back.

Admin stuff

I will be making some changes to the RSS feeds. In case you stop receiving updates, make sure you are using the correct RSS feed link:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/NikonRumors

The old RSS feed (https://nikonrumors.com/feed) will/should automatically be redirected. If you don’t know what RSS feed is – click here (basically, instead of you going to NR, NR will come to you). Don’t like RSS? Get a good old email subscription.

In general, I would like to know if you have/had any technical problems with NikonRumors – slow page loads, page not available, etc. I made a bunch of upgrades recently and want to make sure everyone can access the site without any issues. According to my hosting company everything should be good, but I wanted to double check with the actual readers.

I am already aware of the avatar issue – I have a fix (new WordPress version 2.7) and will push it to the server soon. Has anyone updated their blog to WordPress 2.7? Any feedback?

BTW, if you want to create you own gravatars click here.

Sorry about the off-topic post.

Today’s recap

Update: Another link for Capture NX tutorials. And another one.

Busy day today – thanks to everyone that sent me tips:

  • If you have been sleeping the past 24 hours, here is the news of the day: DXOMark released the Nikon D3x ranking and it looks pretty damn good. Here is a comparison from CNet.
  • Nikon UK extend winter cash back offer – You now have until March 31st, 2009 to take advantage of Nikon’s winter cash back offer.
  • Nikon D90 is suppose to work great with Windows 7 – click here for more info.
  • Breeze Systems Release NKRemote 1.0: remote capture software for Nikon D3, D700, D300, D90 and D200 cameras  – click here for more info.
  • Nikon to provide Picture Control downloads for the D90. This is the email they sent to a NR reader:

“At this time there are no Picture Control downloads for the D90 but they will be made available in the same location as the other ones, http://nikonimglib.com/opc/“. By the way, D3x controls are already available.”

  • I got some rumors for new flashes SB-500 and SB-700 to be release this year.
  • Nikon D90 made it to #4 at the top 10 gadgets of 2008 (source: Time).
  • Surprise, surprise – Nikon Canada is also raising their prices on February 1st (email to a dealer):

“We will be having a price increase on February 1, 2009. Lenses will bare the brunt of this price increase. A number of lenses will have significant increases (Most kit lenses will not increase at that time.) Also, please note that back orders from January that carry into February will not be honored at the pre-February 1st prices.”

Too late

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G lens is already $484.95 at B&H (up from $439, it was even $399 at one point). Adorama has the same price, Amazon sells it for $599 (ouch!).

If you need a need a lens, I suggest you buy it asap – try Adorama, Amazon, B&H, Calumet, Ritz or Abe’s of Maine – you may still get lucky (use those links to purchase if you want to support NR – same price to you – thanks). As I mentioned in an earlier post, many items may not be available until February 1st when the new prices will be introduced.

Best Buy stopped selling a bunch of Nikon lenses

These lenses may be in stock, but they were completely removed online and in no way can they be ordered. The lenses that have been available before January but are no longer available are as follows:

  • AF 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye  SKU was 8638021
  • AF-S 12-24mm f/4  SKU was 7650507
  • AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 VR  SKU was 8815856
  • AF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6  SKU was 8815525
  • AF-S 50mm f/1.4   lost SKU number for this one
  • AF 60mm f/2.8  SKU was 8815614
  • AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR  SKU was 8003634

All Sigma lenses, both Nikon and Canon mounts, are gone as well.

I am not sure what to make out of this report (from someone that works for Best Buy) – maybe they will wait for the price increase, maybe there are new lenses coming, or maybe they will just stop selling Nikon lenses.

Nikon canceling back orders in the US

Similar to what happened in the UK last week, Nikon US is canceling all back orders until the new prices kick in on February 1st.

Nikon prices up in Germany and Austria, Nikon D300 price going down

I got multiple reports for a 8% – 10% increase in Nikon prices at the end of January, 2009 for Austria and Germany.
The interesting part is that the price of the D300 is going down, despite the price increases across the world. I would not be surprised if we see the new D400 even before PMA.
