Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G rumor (part 3)

nikon-70-200mm

The Japanese kakaku board (here is a bad English translation by Google) is chatting about the new Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8G II lens. The basic specs are expected to be:

  • VR II
  • Nano coating
  • New Auto focus priority and manual focus priority
  • Weight 1540g (+70g than Gen. I)
  • Length 209mm, slightly shorter than Gen. I
  • Closest focus distance 1.4m
  • 77mm filter

Based on the tip I received, it seems that this guy nailed the D700 and SB900 before so his credibility is pretty high.

Nikon D700x sooner than expected

I will continue to be “fair and balanced” and report that Thom Hogan has received some information that the Nikon D700x will be released before November 2009. The D700x is expected to have the 24MP sensor from the D3x and video.

I also received multiple tips on the Nikon D700x camera that I sumarized in this post a while ago and it seems that the time frame matches Thom’s prediction on the D700x release date.

Nikon D700x NR probability rating: 60% (up from 40% in the last post)

Nikon D-Movie Screening Room

Nikon Inc. today announces the official launch of the Nikon D-Movie Screening Room (www.nikondmovie.com), an online collection of creative and inspiring videos captured with Nikon’s D90 and D5000 D-SLR cameras. Award-winning director of photography Harris Savides showcases an artistic compilation of life’s most common, anonymous and beautiful moments. Savides, known for his work on Gus Van Sant’s Milk and Ridley Scott’s American Gangster, will be joined in the screening room by other accomplished professionals, as well as aspiring film makers and D-SLR photographers.” (source)

The interesting part is that the nikondmovie.com link from the above press release points to ashtonsdslr.com. What will happened when Ashton gets replaced one day?

Multiple readers also emailed me about the nikonnext.com website which is suppose to “bring the future into focus”. The site has not been updated since the last time we discussed it here on NikonRumors few months ago.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G discontinued (part 2)

The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 light gray version is listed as discontinued on the Japanese site mapcamera.com with the word “生産終了” which means “end of production”:

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G discontinued?

nikon-70-200mm

From dpreview:

“My dealer says they cannot buy the 70-200mm 2.8 VR from Nikon anymore.”

The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G lens is probably the most speculated lens in the whole Nikon product line.

Can someone confirm this report?

Nikon related new/links

This week the Nikon links section will be published earlier. I will be on the road and will have limited Internet access in the next few days:

  • Nikon Solution Expo 2009 canceled.
  • Nikon and Fujitsu will establish a joint company named “Nikon Imaging Systems”. The company will be responsible for the firmware development in Nikon digital cameras (source).
  • Nikon launches D5000 cashback scheme in the UK.

Nikon D3000 picture

Lenstip.com got their hands on a Nikon D3000 picture:

nikon_d3000

Check their site for a detailed comaprisson with the D5000 and a D3000/D5000 overlay. It seems that the video-less version of the Nikon D5000 will be called D3000 and not D4000 as speculated earlier.

The D3000 will be the new entry level DLSR from Nikon.
