Is that it?

Bob Krist wrote on his blog:

“I’m shooting another one of those jobs that I can’t share with you (until the client uses the pictures) and it’s a gig that I can’t even show you the gear I’m using (that’s proprietary too).”

The interesting part is that there is a photo of him taking pictures through the window of a helicopter over Miami. You can see portion of the camera, but it is tough to get any details besides probably that it is full frame (based on the prism size). Check also the lens. This could be it!

Photoshop experts, Start! Your! Engines!

Bob Krist is the guy who did the A Hands-on Guide to Creative Lighting DVD for Nikon, so he is definitely in the circle of trust.

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII problem seems to be wide spread

QC issue with new Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR II

Based on the amount of feedback I received after my post from yesterday (more close-up pictures available here), it seems that the issue with the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII is more common than I expected (I got lucky with mine). At that point it is not clear if this “peeling” will impact the performance of the lens in anyway and whether those pieces will start falling off inside the lens one day. I am not even sure if it is a damaged thread of “real peeling” of the top layer.

I received a report that a customer went back to the store where he originally purchased the lens and checked all 70-200mm available in stock and they all had the same problem.

Trick77.com reports that Nikon service center representative acknowledged the issue and they will fix it. If you have this issue, get yours in for repair asap.

Nikon’s Service Center in Canton, China  documented this issue. The translation: there is presence of tiny particles inside the lens barrel when it’s zoomed to 200mm in the second group of lenses. Customer requests inspections:

Nikon related news/links

  • S0me rumored Nikon D4 specs I received – no idea how reliable this info is:
– 15.7MP (more sensitive and with less noise than D3s)
– Up to 16fps with “double exposure”
– ISO 200-12800 (plus extended range)
– 61-point AF
– 1080p video at 30fps
– CLS control (although no flash is mentioned)

“The present invention relates to an external storage device that can read in and record image data stored in a camera, and to a camera that is connected to such an external storage device. An external storage device according to the present invention comprises: a read out unit that reads out management information in a camera, regarding an image file that is stored within the camera; an identification unit that identifies information on specifying device to which the image file was transmitted, based upon the management information read out by the read out unit; a selection unit that selects an image file to be received from the camera, on the basis of a result of identification by the identification unit; and a reception unit that receives the selected image file.”

I am think something between the Epson P-3000 and the newly announced Canon wireless file transmitter (I did receive a rumor about a new “smart” Nikon grip).

  • Nikon service in Poland must be really bad, so bad that now there is a dedicated website polishnikonservice.com created with the hope that something will change.
  • Multiple reports of a weird peeling of the thread inside of the new 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens – see the full story here. Check yours!

Nikon D700s/D700x/D800/D900 confusion

Lame D700

In the past week I received so much conflicting information about different camera models possibilities (D700s/D700x/D800/D900) that at point I cannot say for sure what will be the actual number. And then today I found out why – the rumor is that this time Nikon has sent blank bodies out for testing, without model number and nobody from the testers really knows what the final version will be. I am not sure if they have done this in the past (Leica labeled the M9 as M8 when they sent it out for testing).

Whatever the model number, the consensus seems to be higher resolution and full HD video. I have not received ISO sensitivity, viewfinder coverage or any other details yet.

Jeff-c and Thom Hogan mentioned that Nikon rotates their model numbering scheme and we are currently in the “odd cycle” D700, D90, D3x, D5000, D3000, D3s, D300s. The next one is the “even cycle” D4, D400, D600, D800. If this is true, D900 could be the real name, especially if it has higher MP that the D700.

Thom Hogans predicts release in the first two weeks of February.  PMA starts on February 21st, 2010. Michel Lammerse posted online his own predictions of what will be coming from Nikon.
