Nikon related news/links

I will be on the road the next few days with limited Internet access – here is the Nikon links section for this week:

  • Nikon UK will take part in The Gadget Show Live held at the Birmingham NEC from 7th-11th April.
  • By looking at a picture of a scene or location, 47 per cent of Britons can remember the scent associated with the photograph – this is according to an international study commissioned by Nikon (source).
  • Two image processing patents applications from Nikon this week: 20100074519 and 20100073523 are for color drift correcting, a saturation reduction and a color correcting.

Update: Nikon confirmed the investigation.

This just in: Associated Press reports that Nikon AG in Switzerland (subsidiary of Nikon Corp. in Japan) has been investigated for “preventing other companies from importing some of its photography products.”

Nikon SB-600 speedlight flash may be discontinued soon

After a report from a reader that Nikon SB-600 may be discontinued at Staples, I decided to contact them and find out about the current availability (the SB-600 is currently listed as out-of-stock). The exact explanation given to me on the phone and during the chat session was that the SB-600 was “put on hold by the vendor” (Nikon) and the item is inactive in their system, which is unusual. Here is a portion of the chat session:

B&H and Adorama list the SB-600 as “temporary out of stock”, Amazon: “Usually ships within 1 to 2 months” has it in stock.

Nikon SB-600 was introduced back in January, 2004.

ThinkTankPhoto backpack winner announcement

The winner of the ThinkTank backpack giveaway is Tom V. from Iowa. Congratulations!

TTP_FreeBag_468x60

I do not have any new rumors to report and I do not want to report questionable rumors. There has been some online chatter about a potential Nikon announcement in April, but at that point I do not know anything about it (last year Nikon announced the D5000 in April). We can all take a few days break, I can post other Nikon related stuff or I can do another giveaway. You decide:

In the mean time you can check LeicaRumors.comPhotoRumors.com or NikonRumors Forum.

Nikon D700 replacement?

Fuji S6 Pro?, originally uploaded by Dutchie2007.

Anonymous rumor about the Nikon D700 replacement (not related to the picture above):

“Basically it will be D700 with 12Mpix and HD video better then D3s and dual cards slots. It will be available first half of 2010 and will not be the only pro DSLR Nikon releases this year. There is also a strong connection to “another” company I don’t know which, but that another company will release some killer pro product with some connection to Nikon. I have only idea about Fuji, but don’t know why they would not make that info public on the Internet.”

I will rate this rumor @ 60% probability – the reason why I rate an anonymous rumor so high is because I have received some similar information in the past.

Last year Fuji said that they will not release a new DSLR in 2009. This indicates that Fuji may have plans to release a new DSLR later one (2010?).
