In few hours (around midnight EST) Nikon will most likely announce the D7100 and a new compact camera. As I already mentioned few weeks ago, the D7100 will have a 24MP sensor and 100-6400 ISO range with body design similar to the D600. The new compact camera will have a fixed 18mm f/2.8 lens (28mm equivalent), APS-C sensor, EXPEED 2 processor and Wi-Fi support.

I want to mention again patent application 20110080659 filed by Nikon on September 30th, 2010 for a 18mm f/2.8 DX lens (28mm equivalent) because I think this could be the lens used in their upcoming high-end APS-C compact camera. As I already mentioned back in 2011 when I covered this patent, this lens is not designed for F-mount – the back focus (BF) is 19mm and it needs to be 46.50mm for F-mount. The lens is also very compact – only 58mm from the image plane to the front element. Here is the lens diagram from the original patent filed in Japan (2008-40033):

I received a very short and crypted tip that Nikon will announce a new compact camera with 16.2 effective megapixels DX-sized CMOS sensor, fixed 28mm f/2.8 (or maybe even f/2.0) lens and EXPEED 2 image processing engine. This could very well be the camera that will be announced this week and I seriously doubt that the D7000 replacement will be introduced as well.
The Samyang T-S 24mm f/3.5 ED AS UMC tilt-shift lens with Nikon mount is currently available for pre-order at B&H for $999 (compared to $1,999 for the Nikkor version). Additional information:
