In addition to the Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera and Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 lens, on October 24th Nikon will officially announce also the development of three new 1 Nikkor lenses:

  • 1 Nikkor 32mm f/1.2
  • 1 Nikkor 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6
  • 1 Nikkor 10-100mm f/4-5.6

The new Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens expected to start shipping at the end of November

The new Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens that is expected to be announced next week will probably start shipping at the end of November, 2012. The price of the lens is expected to be in the $1,000-$1,300 range (depending on your local currency). I do not have the exact US price yet.

Breaking: Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens with next generation VR to be announced next week

Together with the Nikon 1 V2, on October 24th Nikon will announce also a new 70-200mm f/4 lens that will most likely be the first Nikkor lens with the next generation VR system. This lens has been rumored for a while and was supposed to be announced back in 2010/2011, not sure what caused the delay – maybe Nikon decided to pull the trigger after the Tokina AT-X 70-200mm f/4 PRO IF FX lens was introduced early this year (not released yet).

Quick Nikon Coolpix P7700, S01 and 800c hands-on report

A reader sent me a short hands-on report on the latest Nikon Coolpix models:

The camera WILL NOT turn on if you have the screen closed – for me that’s strange, but Nikon stated that it’s implemented that way in order to prevent incidentally turning the camera on while it’s in a bag etc. I think it should be possible to turn that option on or off in the menu, but I didn’t look for it and don’t think it can be changed – users will just have to get used to first turn the LCD and then push the power button. I didn’t notice the camera to turn on while pulling and rotating the screen, but they may have been pre-production models.

Nikon patent for a camera you can toss in the air to take pictures from above

Nikon’s patent 2012-189859 is exactly what designer Junho Yoon envisioned: a camera that you can throw up in the air in order to snap picture from above (see more camera design concepts here). The patent describes built-in velocity and acceleration sensors that can detect when to take pictures while in the air. In order to survive the fall, Nikon will make the camera “impact resistance” and will use a collapsible lens in order to protect the glass.
