What to expect from Nikon in the next few months

Nikon Rumors
This is an updated post on what to expect from Nikon in the next few months:

Nikon 1 V3

Nikon-1-camera-patent-design
A new Nikon 1 V3 camera will be announced this week. On several occasions in the past Nikon confirmed that they are still committed to their mirrorless line, even after disappointing sales from Europe and the US. Here are the rumored Nikon 1 V3 specifications:

  • New specs: 20 fps, 171 contrast AF points
  • No optical viewfinder
  • Optional, external 2.4MP electronic viewfinder (EVF) that will attach to the hot shoe
  • Built-in flash
  • Standard hot shoe – you will be able to use regular Nikon Speedlights and the built-in flash could act as a wireless commander(I reported that back in November last year)
  • Several new interesting video features
  • New external grip will not take any batteries, but it will have a shutter button and front dial
  • Expeed 4a imaging processor
  • Completely new camera design similar to the drawings of this recently filed patent and it will be all black (not sure if they will offer different colors)
  • Very fast everything
  • 18MP sensor
  • Eye sensor and a button to switch between LCD and EVF
  • 180° swivel LCD screen

Two new Nikkor 1 lenses and other accessories are also expected to be announced this week.

Nikkor lenses

I have no updates on the rumored Nikon lenses:

Surprise: Nikon D4s is not the best low light camera according to DxOMark

Nikon-D4s-DxOMark-test-2DxOMark published their results for the Nikon D4s camera. The surprise (at least for me) is that the Nikon Df still has a better overall low light performance (3279 vs. 3074 for the D4s). For now the Nikon Df is still the “Lord of Darkness“.

Here are few more D4s comparisons with various Nikon and Canon cameras:

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G full frame lens review

Nikon 35mm f-1.8G full frame lens1
Riccardo Serra will share his first impressions from the new Nikon 35mm f/1.8G full frame lens ($596.95):

Few days ago I got one of the first production samples of the new Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G FX lens. I’ve been dreaming of this lens since I bought my D700 in April 2012 and I was eager to give it a try. In my opinion the lens was really worth the wait. So I took it for a short evening session and here are my first impressions:

Nikon D4 vs. D4s high ISO comparison

Nikon_D4S_image_sensor_unit

Nikon D4s camera’s sensor

Updatehere is a much more detailed hight ISO comparison between several full frame Nikon cameras.

A reader did some quick high ISO comparisons between the Nikon D4 and D4s cameras and sent me few screenshots (available also on flickr). I have another comparison coming in the next few days.

I have long benefited from and enjoyed your site, so I thought it was time that I contribute.

I had the opportunity to test both a D4s and a D4 together. Here is a side-by-side comparison of their high ISO performance using the world’s best DSLR lens (believe the hype), the Zeiss Otus 55 mm f/1.4. I carefully AF fine tuned both cameras with this lens using Lens Align II, then shot the same object, an extraordinarily finely carved vessel, at f/4, the aperture at which the Otus is sharpest in the center.  The photos were recorded as 14-bit NEF files.
