I got another tip for April 16th as a potential release date, but this is Thursday which is unusual day for an announcement.

Nikon related news/links

  • Digital Camera Customer Satisfaction Survey: Nikon acquired the first place with a score of 711 (out of 1000), trailed by Pentax and Canon both scoring 697 points.
  • Nikon D3x price drop: I got a report  that Adorama sells it for $7299.00, but you have to call them (not available online). B&H will sell it to you on the phone for $7,699.95. The Nikon price watch section was updated.
  • The rumor is that Nikon will start serving directly the Mexico market (currently they are using a distributor).
  • Fuji DSLR’s are still alive? Here is the translation (source):

“Today is the opening day of the Milan Photography Equipment Show and I went there and found out a few interesting things. One of them is being able to talk to a Fujifilm engineer about the next generation DSLR. First the DSLR being developed currently will use the EXR sensor in the F200 and has multiple (film?) modes. Next it’s still based on Nikon’s body. It’s not sure which specific body, could be the D300. Sensor size is most likely the 1.5x DX format. In terms of introduction date, he said very directly that it would be within six months based on the current speed of progress, definitely will be the Christmas shopping season. He also said there will be another flagship consumer model available before the DSLR, using EXR technology.”

Interview with Miyano Kazumi (Nikon Public Relations):

  • Micro 4/3: “Nikon has no plans to do so for the moment… Nikon remains focused for now on FX and DX format.”
  • Future of DX format: “Some believe that this type of optical has no place in the family of APS-C, but we are convinced to the contrary and continue to work in this direction on the DX format”
  • New products for the PIE 2009 show“We prefer to make announcements throughout the year when products are ready.”

Nikon D90 with Nikon Media Port UP300x combo – the future of photography?

nikon-d90-media-port-up300x

Few months ago Nikon announced a rather weird product: the Nikon Media Port UP300x. At the Photo Imaging Expo 2009 in Japan, Nikon had the Media Port UP300x on display connected to a Nikon D90 – the photographer could basically see the viewfinder through the eyepiece. Pretty cool! You add a remote trigger and you have something you can impress your clients with.  Check the whole report at focus-numerique.com:

  • can play audio and videos files
  • display: 640×480 pixels / 16 million colors
  • has build in WiFi

Free Capture NX 2 (Ver. 2.2) update coming in April 2009

Two days ago Nikon nicely informed the world about an upcoming free update of Capture NX 2:

Tokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that from the beginning of April 2009, they will offer a free download of image-editing software Capture NX 2, Ver. 2.2 to current users of Versions 2.0 and 2.1.1. In addition to providing the features of earlier versions, which allow quick-and-easy on-image photo editing to optimize photographer workflow, this latest version includes more powerful and refined tools to greatly improve image-processing efficiency. Newly added functions include improved speed in batch processing, Intel-approved logo permitted for Core 2 Duo/Core 2 Quad support, NRW (COOLPIX P6000’s RAW data) support, vignette control function utilizing lens information, and axial color aberration correction.

This part is interesting:

NRW, a form of RAW data taken with the COOLPIX P6000, is newly supported.

Was this done just for the P6000? A little bit too late, or maybe Nikon had something else in mind.

I already have few sample headlines based on discussions from the blog – feel free to add your own. For now I am using a very simplistic platform/design, but if we get enough interested readers I will move to something more serious.
