More Nikon patents – hint for a mirrorless Nikon camera?

Nikon filed a bunch of patents at the end of 2008 – here is the patent search result of Nikon + lens. Please note that most of those are just patent applications and may or may not lead to a final production model.

  • Here is another patent (20090154915) that will cover the lens mount while the lens is removed (Note that the camera on the figure below is mirrorless!):

“Heretofore, lens-interchangeable type cameras provided with a barrier that, in a state in which an interchangeable lens is not attached, closes off an aperture that is provided in a casing for allowing the passage of object light has been known.”

  • Patent 20090167927 – Image sensor, focus detection device, focus adjustment device and image-capturing apparatus:

“It’s a patent for having auto focus pixels on a sensor. They have suggested that we can have some rows on the sensor of a camera dedicated to auto-focus. The pixel rows on either side of the auto focus pixels will have slightly different sensitivities to make up for the ‘lost’ row of data.”

Adorama so far is the only major retailer that takes pre-orders for the new Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens. It is still unclear if the new lens has a AF lock buttons on the lens barrel. Here is a comparison between the old and the new model:

What’s wrong with Outer Mongolia?

i-love-mogolia

If you don’t know what is this all about – check NikonRumors twitter page (update: here is the direct link). This is not important enough to be discussed on NikonRumors, but I had to make a statement: I LOVE MONGOLIA! I LOVE OUTER MONGOLIA TOO!

Groundbreaking Nikon news = code name Nikon VP650

Update: here is a scan of the magazine.

This just in (thanks J):

I’m sending you this tip I found in the most popular French photography magazine (the equivalent of popular photography in France) called “Chasseur d’Images” (maybe you’ve heard of it before). They’re usually very VERY well informed because they’ve been here for a long time.
In their august issue, they’re talking with A LOT of confidence (as if it was a sure thing) of a new Nikon product with the code name Nikon VP650 that should be announced in August and shipped in September. This camera would be a compact camera with a LED projector that could project up to  8×12 images in good quality in the dark. They are also stating that this projector could be manufactured by the company FoxLink (it’s in Taiwan). If I’m sending you this, it’s because I trust this magazine very much, because they’ve been right before, and because it came out on July 25th and they were already giving out the specs of the d3000 and the D300s!!  When I’m reading you’re latest post and this news from Chasseur d’Images, it’s seems to me that this compact with a projector is the groundbreaking news were waiting for.

The reader is refering to magazine #316 (July 21 – September 21 2009). Chasseur d’Images have indeed provided us with some good leaks in the past. This news combined with my previous posts (see here and here) will bump the rating of this rumor to 95%. Just what’s with the name VP650 – hopefully this really is just a code name: VP = Video Projector?

Here is a link to “Foxlink developing micro projector”. Apple, Nokia and Samsung are also planing to use this device.

Extent of Nikon D5000 recall. On the Nikon Singapore site you can spend endless time entering numerous serials to determine the range of cameras affected. It doesn’t stop you after a few entries which the US one seemed to do. Serial nos for Asia and Europe I think start with a 6, US with a 3 maybe. Based on my entering and refining numerous numbers, the range of serial beginning with 6 shows that numbers between approx 6 001300 and 6 129257 all need to be recalled. If my logic is correct, it could (I say could, as this is an assumption based on numbering, not necessarily Nikon practise) mean that some 127 THOUSAND cameras beginning with the prefix 6 are in the recall list. If correct, this means Nikon has some serious trouble on their hands. It also means they probably knew about this for a while, enough time to gear up to fix al this stuff. And that’s just the numbers prefixed by 6.

Nikon continues to push DX lenses? ( new Nikkor 85mm VR DX patent)

Very busy week – those rumors just won’t stop (check the latest Leica and Sony rumors). Back to Nikon: there is a new Nikon patent for what it appears to be a 85mm VR DX lens. This patent is not yet listed on Google Patents, but can be found here. Maybe somebody more technical than me can interpret those formula and numbers.

Patents applications do not necessary lead to a final production model.

FIY Nikon has released 3 DX and 1 FX lenses this year.

“Nikon will reveal something groundbreaking next week”

question_markThomas Lorenzen and Svend Erik Nørklit from Nikon Denmark held a press conference on Thursday in Copenhagen for the Nikon D300s, D3000 and the two new lenses. I received a report that at the end of the event they said “Nikon will reveal a groundbreaking news next week” (unconfirmed report). Look at the 11:00 entry in this report from that event (thanks for the link web-fotografen.dk).

I am still waiting on confirmations on the above story and on what’s coming next week. The fact that is a weekend doesn’t really help. There is a Nikon event scheduled for August 4th in Austria and in Sweden. I have received pictures of a Coolpix camera with a built-in projector. I am sorry, but this time I could not puplish the pictures online – I could only describe the camera (requested by the source). I can tell you that the camera looked like the Coolpix S60. Is this going to be the “groundbreaking news”? A new Nikon P6000 maybe? I don’t know yet.

FYI: you can go to microvision.com for more info on those mini-projectors.

P.S: I added the 70-200 lens poll to the previous post.
