The just released Nikon NEF codec version 1.12.0 has added support for Nikon 1 and 64-bit Windows computers:

  • Supports NEF (RAW) images taken with the Nikon 1 J1, Nikon 1 V1.
  • Supports 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.
If thumbnails for NEF files fail to display correctly in the Photo Gallery or Photo Viewer for 64-bit editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, perform a disk clean-up as described below.

    Cool !
The pictures I took with my D800 came out much better !
Thank you Mr (and Mrs) Nikon !
    :)

So… the D800 is on sale?

    • karl

      wow, you’re still using D800 ???

    • Dweeb

I heard the D800 was delayed until Photokina due to the flooding.

      • T.I.M

        @Dweeb
I heard the Fotokina may be delay because of the problems with the Euro.

      you troll :P

  • Cloke

Anyone else getting an error when attempting to install this?

  • ku

I just installed on my computer without an issue. But the CPU keeps running at around 30~40% after reboot. I guess the system is creating thumbnails fro NEF files??

  • nrb

How many freaking years did this take?

  • GeofFx

Can someone explains what this means to those of us who don’t know much about computers? Will it impact image quality? Thanks.

    • PHB

Nikon had their head up their ass and only supported 32bit versions of Windows.

This was rather stupid when Windows 7 ships as 64 bit by default.

      • Richard

… but, as usual, no support for those of us, “pioneers” running xp 64?

  • PeterO

Uh-oh, this new update made our avatars disappear.

  • The invisible man

    Ok,
The D700 is now out of stock EVERYWHERE, if think it’s time for the D800 to show up.
7 days left until the 18th…….
    :)

Everywhere is the wrong word to use, I can walk into at least 6 shops here and pick one of the shelf with no problems at all.

      • T.I.M

        @Andre

I’m talking about online stores, “real” stores can have a D700 on the shelve for months before someone buy it.

Online stores have much shorter stocks, it reflect the manufacturer’s stock more acurately.

Could this hint at NX-3? Something that will run on Lion?

  • Fredbare

This codec has been out since the 1st Nov. tried to join the forums to let everyone know but have not been granted that privledge it seems (now tried twice).
Anyway, it runs on my Win 7 Pro PC as a 64 bit just fine.
    Long wait, but worth it.

Did you try the NikonRumors Forum?

      • Fredbare

Yup, a few months back and about 5 days ago. Same thing ‘You will be contacted by email …’ or similar.
Enjoy the site and the news – keeps me up to date and allows me to save for ‘upcoming’ Nikon products. Just want to contribute when I can.

    Thanks admin !

    It’s about time!

It is nice to have some good news, after the parade of bad news. Finally, a 64 bit codec.

Not sure how to classify the mirror less Nikons. Good for some, not interesting to me.

  • Melissa

Been waiting for this but getting errors installing.

    • Fredbare

Did you right click the EXE and install as Administrator?

  • http://www.Thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

I’m hoping Capture NX3 is near!

    • Fredbare

You and I. Almost ordered Lightroom 3 this week in disgust of the overdue delay on NX3 but love NX2 ‘selective removal of adjustments’. There’s always hope …

  • k2

    Yes, Thanks Admin.
NR is becoming my go-to website for Nikon updates as well :)

  • :(

I put my CF card into my Nintendo 64 and switched it on and it still says no cartridge loaded, even when I switch the kettle on.

  • William Andrew

Now that NIK has stopped support for CEP PRO4 for NX2 I wonder if it is worth supporting this companies software in the future.
