New-Nikon-Rumors-Forum

The Nikon Rumors Forum is now running on a new platform. The old forum is still available online in read-only mode until I figure out how to transfer everything over. The new forum offers several useful features, including the “Ask a question” option which I believe will also be helpful for many blog readers:

Nikon announcement on January 8, 2013 (CES show)

1-NIKKOR-10-100mm-f4-5.6-lens1-NIKKOR-6.7-13mm-f3.5-5.6-lens

Nikon has scheduled an official press release for January 8, 2013, which is the starting date of the 2013 CES show. In addition to the new Nikon 1 J3 and S1 mirrorless cameras, I believe Nikon will also announce the availability of two new 1 Nikkor lenses: 1 Nikkor 10-100mm f/4-5.6  and 1 Nikkor 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6. The development of those two lenses (together with the 1 Nikkor 32mm f/1.2) were announced back in October and Nikon is expected to start shipping them early next year. There is still no word on the new 800mm f/5.6 lens that was introduced back in July, 2012.

It seems that Nikon does have a fix for the green tint on the LCD screen of the D800

Nikon D800 green tint LCD screen fix Nikon D800 green tint LCD screen fix (2)

Noah Bershatsky had a Nikon D800 camera with a green tint on the LCD screen and he got it fixed by Nikon USA. You can read all details on his blog:

There was no communication from Nikon, but out of the blue my D800 was returned today.  It’s in good clean condition and the LCD matches my Colormunki Display calibrated monitor!

Impress magazine predicts a Nikon D800 styled body with the 16MP sensor from the D4 in 2013

Nikon-2013-predictions

The Japanese magazine Impress published their Nikon predictions for 2013 (they are doing this every year – see their 2012 predictions here):

  • A new, D800 sized body, with the 16MP sensor from the D4. Nikon did that with the D3 and D700, but never released a camera with the improved sensor from the D3s. While this scenario is certainly possible, I still believe that Nikon is afraid of cannibalizing their D4 sales with such camera.
  • New DX lenses (something I mentioned few months ago).
  • Nikon D7000 replacement (see also this post). While 2012 was a FX year (three full frame DSLRs were announced), I think that 2013 will be the year of the DX format.

See the full list of 2013 predictions from Impress. Please note that those are just the opinions of the the editors, this information was not confirmed by Nikon.

I guess it is now safe to breathe on your lens to clean it

A quick update: Nikon USA removed the sentence from their support page where they suggested not to breathe on your lens to clean it because the lens coating could be damage. I guess it is now safe to continue to clean your lens by “fogging” it.

Nikon to announce two new mirrorless camera during the 2013 CES show in January: J3 and S1

nikon-1-J3-S1-mirrorless-cameras

This is a rather an unusual development: Nikon will announce two new mirrorless cameras during the 2013 CES show that will take place in Las Vegas between January 8-11.

Nikon 1 J3

The Nikon 1 J3 will have a 14MP sensor with slightly improved specs. Don’t expect anything major in terms of new functionality or design. FYI: the J2 was announced just 4 months ago (August 9, 2012).
