Press release:

Nikon Vision Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Nikon Corporation, is pleased to present Fieldscope Digital SLR Camera Attachment FSA-L2 for use exclusively with Nikon EDG Fieldscopes and Nikon D-SLR cameras.
The Digital SLR Camera Attachment FSA-L2, which has 3.5x zoom and 500-1,750mm (f/5.9-21) focal length, used together with the new EDG Fieldscopes enables super-telephoto shooting with Nikon D-SLR cameras. The D-SLR camera’s Aperture-Priority Auto Mode can be used when the camera is connected to the FSA-L2 and EDG Fieldscope.
The new EDG Fieldscopes have been developed to provide excellent optical and mechanical performance, not only for observation but for digiscoping as well. The FSA-L2 features a bright optical path with fully multilayer-coated lenses. The combination of EDG Fieldscopes, the FSA-L2 and Nikon D-SLR cameras allows the capture of beautiful moments with high precision and superb image quality.

Key Features:

  • Quickly and easily attaches directly to the F-mount of a Nikon digital SLR camera, for easy connection with an EDG Fieldscope
  • Multilayer coating is applied to all lens elements for brighter optics
  • Zoom function features an internal vari-magnification system, with magnification of 3.5x
  • Focal length ranges from 500mm to 1,750mm when attached to EDG Fieldscope 85/85-A
  • Compatible with camera exposure modes: Metered Manual Mode and Aperture-Priority Auto Mode
  • Exterior design and color synchronized to match digital SLR camera and EDG fieldscope

Amazon will be soon taking pre-orders for the FSA-L2 (for now just email notification is available).

Few months ago Nikon announced a new line of EDG fieldscopes and they are expensive:

Nikon P6000 starting to disappear – is Nikon P7000 coming soon?

Today Canon announced the PowerShot G11 – the surprise: 10MP sensor, lower resolution than the previous G10 model. Maybe the pixel war is over and finally Nikon will get some serious competition 🙂

Back to Nikon Rumors: the top of the line Nikon P6000 p&s camera is starting to disappear from online retailers, even from Nikon’s own website (already mentioned few days ago):

Adorama: out of stock.

Amazon: only 5 left in stock at the time of this post from third party vendors.

Ritz doesn’t even list the P6000 any longer.

B&H: discontinued:

Note the weird positioning of the new Coolpix cameras on the right – it seems that they were ready to release more and pull the plug at the last moment.

A German online retailer has the Nikon P6000 listed as “sol. Vorrat reicht” which means “as long as we have them” – this is typical when the item is low on stock and cannot be re-ordered:

Maybe Nikon will soon respond to the G11 challenge.

FYI the Nikon P6000 was released on August 6th, 2008 and as far as I remember this was the first p&s camera with a built-in GPS.

Official statement from Nikon on second D5000 recall

Official press statement for the second Nikon D5000 recall:

Nikon would like to confirm that it has contacted a small number of D5000 customers within Europe that have previously sent their cameras in for repair following the recent Service Notice, asking them to re-send their cameras in to their local service centre for further repair work. Subsequent to the publishing of the Service Notice and the adoption of the preventative maintenance, an additional and enhanced procedure was developed. A small number of D5000 cameras in Europe were not initially treated with this enhanced procedure so we are asking customers to return them to us for a short time. The process of repairing affected D5000s is being handled in a fast and efficient manner and we are committed to maintaining this level of service so that the issue is fully resolved within the near future.

In addition, Nikon recommends that all D5000 customers check the updated list of “Affected Product Serial Numbers”, further to the following Service Notice as additional product serial numbers have been added.

Finally: Nikon Fabre Photo EX microscope available for purchase

In February 2009 Nikon announced the Fabre Photo EX microscope which now offers a DSLR attachment (the previous model Nikon EZ-Micro Stereoscopic Microscope could only take a Coolpix camera). The product was not announced in the US and it seems that nobody from Nikon support have heard of it. I had dozens of people asking me about this product and its availability. I finally found a website in Japan that is dedicated in “bridging the gap between 2 worlds apart, Japan and the rest of the world”. They are wiling to ship the Nikon Fabre Photo EX microscope to the US for $26 flat fee. The prices are as follow:

Nikon Fabre Photo EX Camera Microscope for sale:
Nikon Fabre Photo EX Camera Microscope: US$1,303
FSBU1 (compact camera adapter): USD 338
NSA-L1 (DSLR adapter): USD 550

I will order one and will post a brief review after I get it.

Nikon D300s starting to show up in stores

A dpreview member from Germany had a chance to play with the Nikon D300s in a local Nikon dealer (no virtual horizon in the viewfinder?).

Electricpig has D300s unboxing pictures.

NPS Nikon D300s pre-orders will start shipping in the next few days (more pre-order option available here).

…and three new Nikon D300s videos after the break:

We should pay a very close attention to this patent (Nikon Micro AF-S 85mm f/3.5 DX VR)

We should pay a very close attention to Nikon patent 20090190220 (already discussed here and here) for the Nikon AF-S 85mm f/3.5 DX VR lens 😉

Nikon_AF-S_85mm_f3.5_DX_VRII_lens

Don’t ask me why – just do it…

Update: as a reader already noted (quote from the patent application):

“An internal focus type MACRO lens having an image blur correction function has been proposed”

so based on this patent this should be an AF-S DX IF VR Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5 lens.

Need help from France and the UK (Nikon D700x & Nikkor 35mm f/1.4)

A post on the Spanish forum ojodigital.com (Google translation):

“In the September issue of the prestigious French magazine Réponses Photo, which has appeared today in the kiosks will be announced for September:
– A Nikon D700x (or D800) to be the D3x what the D700 to the D3 (Sony 24 Mpx sensor).”

Update: this what was written in the magazine – no real news:

“Nikon shouldn’t stop here (D300 & D3000) and we bet these 2 body will be joined by the very expected D700x (or D800?). This body should be to the the D700 what the D3x is to the D3, that is to say a Sony 25 MP sensor, and why not video?”

Can anyone that has the latest issue give us some more details?

And another one (from dpreview):

“…the latest Calumet brochure here in UK and it’s showing a 35mm 1.4 for around £1100”

This could be the old Nikon 35mm f/1.4 AI NAF MF lens. Can anyone confirm this please (maybe send me a screenshot)?

Update: this indeed was the old 35mm f/1.4 lens – got multiple confirmations from readers that have the Calumet catalog – the part # was the same.
