Nikon Coolpix P100, Coolpix L110 expected

Nikon Coolpix P100 (P90 replacement) and Coolpix L110 (L100 replacement) are expected on February 3rd. Those will not be the only Coolpix cameras that will be announced.

I will rate this rumor @ 80% today since I expect more details tomorrow.

Still no word of DSLR or lenses announcements.

PopPhoto’s crystal ball

Crystal Ball, originally uploaded by deanfotos66.

Popular Photography named the Nikon D3X as its camera of the year for 2009. In the same article they mentioned:

“Our crystal ball tells us the D3x’s 24.5MP sensor is likely to show up in a consumer model soon.”

Not sure how accurate their crystal ball is.

Nikon press conference scheduled for February 3rd, 2010

Nikon press conference is scheduled for February 3rd, 2010 – I am saying this with 100% confidence. As I mention before, this time I will not specify the country and location. This date also matches with the expected release of new Coolpix cameras on February 2nd.

In the past Nikon has not scheduled press conferences for their Coolpix line – they have done that only for new DSLR models and lenses. On February 3rd we will either have Coolpixes, DSLRs and lenses announced at the same time, or Nikon has a “special” Coolpix to talk about.

If the February 3rd event is Coolpix related (I doubt  that), we may expect another press conference the week after.

Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III is also listed

Update: Nikon USA corrected their website, the smoke remains.

Same “typo” for the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II:

Good timing on updating those teleconverters before the 2010 winter Olympics.

The new Nikon TC-17E III teleconverter

Update: Nikon USA corrected their website, the smoke remains.

Just a clarification on the Nikon TC-17E III teleconverter: this rumor is not based on the Nikon website listing that could be a typo (two typos in two sentences?):

I received the information about the new Nikon TC-17E III teleconverter few days ago and after I posted it online today, a reader pointed me to Nikon’s website. Coincidence? I like coincidences:)

New Nikon Coolpix cameras on February 2nd

I know many readers here do not care about Coolpix cameras. I expect that Nikon will deliver at least one unique and innovative point and shoot camera – maybe built-in GPS, email, etc. – they have filed multiple patents applications in this area.

The interesting part of this announcement will be the high end Coolpix segment. The Nikon Coolpix P6000 was introduced on August 6th, 2008 and is due for a replacement. Will Nikon replace it with a P7000 or with the new Nikon EVIL system? I am expecting more details soon.

Nikon related links/news/rumors

A little bit of everything. First some rumors that I did not post before since I do not have any confirmations from other sources:

  • Rumor: new Nikon TC 1,7 teleconverter should be released at the end of January. The design should be similar to the new Nikon TC-20E III AF-S 2x teleconverter. I have no previous history from this source and cannot confirm the validity of this rumor. UPDATE: this could be a typo, but the Nikon TC-17E III teleconverter is already listed on this lens compatibility table.
  • I am expecting some details about a Nikon press conference. This time I will not be mentioning countries.
  • Another hint for the rumored AF-S 85 f/1.4 lens: famous German sports shooter Michael Weber is selling his AF-D 85/1.4 lens on the nikonpoint.de forum, maybe he knows something we don’t (I know this is a stretch, but we talking about rumors here).

And some other news:

  • DtownTV is back with a new address: kelbytv.com and… it’s different.
  • Now back to the 70-200 VRII “issue” – although not yet official, it seems that there is no problem with this lens according to multiple reports from Nikon customer service centers from around the world. Here is another explanation:

“The strange looking edge is glue. In the old version of the 70-200 there was a kind of plastic ring covering the glue. What you see now are the tiny bubbles inside the glue which are enlarged through the lenses. The stuff that looks like dust all over the lens is actually at the edge of the lens. The lenses are grinded during production and what looks like dust are the reflections of the grinded edge.”

I also received some reports that lenses were actually accepted for repair. The classification of the fix is “Moderate Repair: Major Parts Replaced”:
