Nikon cameras at WestLicht Photographica Auction

Sorry, I forgot to include this material in my weekly links post:

During the exclusive Westilicht auction that took place on December 4th, two Nikon cameras made it to the top 3 most expensive cameras sold – a Nikon F3 NASA from 1986 and a Nikon S2-E both sold for 168,000EUR (around 225,000 USD). The first and second place were of course held by Leica cameras – somebody actually paid 402,000 EUR (around 537,000USD) for a Leica MP camera and this is a lot, even for Leica’s standards (the most expensive Leica camera ever sold).

If you are adventurous, there is currently a Nikon F3 NASA for sale on eBay for 22,500 USD.

FYI: Nikon S2 rangefinders can be found for few hundred dollars on eBay. More info on Nikon S rangefinders can be found here and here.

Nikon promises a firmware fix for the D7000 hot pixels issue *updated*

D7000hotpixel

There is a big thread in the  NikonRumors forum and several other websites describing hot pixels on the Nikon D7000 when taking videos in low light. I have been holding off to write about this issue because I wasn’t sure if this is a wide-spread problem or just a defective batch of cameras. Today, Nikon Japan published a service announcement and it seems that a new firmware upgrade for the Nikon D7000 will fix this issue (update: the service message is now published in English, also available on Nikon USA):

“We have received reports from some users of the Nikon D7000 digital SLR camera regarding the occurrence of noticeable bright spots with movie recording under certain conditions.

Nikon believes that these bright spots are not normally noticeable, and therefore do not indicate a problem with practical use. However, with further investigation of the reports received, we have confirmed that bright spots may be noticeable when recording movies of especially dark scenes or subjects.

In order to provide our customers with better products, Nikon is currently preparing to release a firmware upgrade with measures to reduce the occurrence of these bright spots for the D7000. Further details will be announced at a later date.”

In Taiwan, Sony surpasses Nikon in the interchangeable lens camera market

Digitimes reports that in Taiwan, Nikon’s market share for interchangeable lens cameras dropped to 20-25% compared to Canon with 42-43% and Sony with 30%. The reasons for Nikon’s drop are product shortages and strong sales of Sony NEX cameras. The website goes further by stating that Nikon is able to satisfy only 50% of all existing orders. The shortages are expected to be resolved by December 2010.

After Nauticam and Ikelite, Aquatica will also release their AD7000 underwater housing for the Nikon D7000 DSLR camera. The retail price of 2,499.00 USD will place the Aquatica housing between the Nauticam and the Ikelite versions (in terms of price). Expected delivery is slated for early 2011.

RRS thinks that Nikon D4 will be released in mid-2011

ReallyRightStuff sent out their 2011 catalog today and they have a entry for a new BD4 or BD4-L plates for Nikon D4 camera. The comment section says “Camera to be released mid 2011. Check website for plate details”:

The wide spread belief is that Nikon does not share information in advance with different vendors about unreleased cameras. On the other hand RRS is a serious company with excellent products and I am not sure why would they speculate on a future Nikon camera in their official 2011 catalog.

P.S: dpreview’s review of the Nikon D7000 is up (overall score: 80%, D300s had an overall score of 82%)
