Nikon is preparing a major announcement at the end of August

Certain Nikon offices have already blocked employees from taking vacation in the last two weeks of August 2011. Expect major announcements during that time frame (my guess: D3s and/or D300s replacement). This is not really surprising, since Nikon likes to make announcements at the end of Summer (the D3, D300, D90, D3100, D7000, many lenses and Coolpix cameras were all announced around that time in the past few years). End of August announcement will also give Nikon the opportunity to show the new products at CliQ 2011 in Las Vegas (September 6-11, 2011).

There should be at least one major product announcement before the summer (my guess: D700 replacement).

Regarding the upcoming Coolpix line refresh – it will probably happen around February 8-15, 2011. It is still unknown if the point and shoot cameras will be the only announcement next month.

Lensbaby Composer lens review (Nikon mount)

Overview

Lensbaby’s Composer model is a 50mm lens where the glass elements can be swiveled around just like a ball head and achieve selective focus only in portions of the frame. Some of the results produced with the Composer are similar to a real tilt shift lens. The box contains the lens with front and back lens caps, lens pouch and the interchangeable, magnetic aperture disks:

Flashback: Nikon mirrorless camera will be “something that nobody is currently making”

one of the many Nikon patents for a mirrorless camera

one of the many Nikon patents for a mirrorless camera

I am going to re-publish the recap of the Photokina interview with Tetsuro Goto (Director of Laboratory Research and Development of the Nikon Imaging Company) where he said that the mirrorless solution from Nikon will probably not be targeted towards professionals and the main emphasis will be on small size and unique features:

When asked about interesting concepts at Photokina it seems the Samsung NX100 caught his eye with the camera’s small size as a key to this systems’ merit. The interviewer jumps at this and asks if it is OK to say that when so many people are waiting for Nikon to develop mirror less systems. He then asks that if Nikon was hypothetically willing to make a mirror less interchangeable lens system, would it be APS-C, considering the problem with size due to lenses used. He replies that going APS-C would only make things bigger and would detract from the F mount’s market value in terms of IQ and features. If the lens system and body are not smaller in total, the whole meaning of reducing size is lost.  If it was up to him to make such a thing, a mount smaller than the F would be chosen (his personal opinion)

In the interview Mr. Gotou does not confirm whether they are developing mirror less systems, he says that they are “eagerly developing a new genre of camera” that president Kimura described (in a previous interview probably) as “something that no maker is currently making” and that there is a hush order on what that thing is and that Nikon president Kimura says “Nikon will introduce this product as soon as it is completed” but also Mr. Gotou added “Nikon will view the market movement to decide when to introduce this product”

When asked whether it is a concept that will appeal to people using such product for work (I guess he means a pro product) or more of an enthusiast type concept, he responds by saying that although it is not targeted towards people who use cameras in their work, some will  look at this product as a really fun to use camera.

It happened again: Sony replaced Nikon from the #2 spot in the UK

I have been saying this for a long time and after Taiwan it happened again in the UK: according to AP Sony took the #2 spot from Nikon in the UK in volume sales of interchangeable lens models for December 2010 (Sony now has 25%, Nikon is down to 20%). I don’t think Sony got to the #2 spot with better image quality but rather with innovation.

Pocketwizard patents a new type of embedded radio flash trigger for Nikon cameras

I follow only Nikon related patents and when I saw this patent from a company called Lab Partners Associates, I immediately ignored it.

But then I got curious – who is that company that dares to patent a new wireless radio flash trigger for Nikon. Well, Lab Partners Associates Inc. is actually Pocketwizard and the inventor of this patent James E. Clark is one of the brains behind LPA.

Now back to the patent:

“A method for controlling one or more remote photographic flash devices from a camera body, the method comprising:

  • electrically receiving a flash synchronization signal internal to the camera body;
  • using the flash synchronization signal to generate within the camera body an RF signal;
  • communicating the RF signal via a wired connection to an antenna external to the camera body; and
  • wirelessly communicating the RF signal from the external antenna to the one or more remote photographic flash devices.

The patent describes the installation of the wireless communication module inside the camera and even mentions “in a camera such as a Nikon” (see images after the break):

“The wireless communication module of the present invention adds wireless control functionality to existing devices, for example cameras. The module is inserted in a device that was originally designed without, or with different, remote control functionality. A device including the module can remotely operate other devices using the existing controls of the device. The module enables a user to remotely operate external devices without any cables running back to the device. It also allows a user to remotely operate other devices that include the wireless communication module.”

my favorite band: Vicious Rumors :)

my favorite band: Vicious Rumors 🙂

Generally, I am trying to filter out a random rumors from the Internet because usually they are just speculations, guesses and wish lists. Here are some recent Nikon rumors from other websites. I cannot vouch for any of those – your guess is as good as mine:

According to a “guy from Nikon tech support“: D700 replacement is coming in March or April with 16-18 MP sensor and costs of around $2000. Another Nikon D800 rumor from a Chinese forum has the same date – March of 2011. According to the forum member, D800 pre-order procedure for dealers in China has already started. The specs:

  • 18mp sensor
  • 98% preview
  • full HD
  • AF module will be updated
  • Body flash will be removed
  • The looks of D800 is nearly the same as D700
  • Released in March 0f 2011

I also received several reports that the Nikon D700 is not available for orders in some countries.
