Nikon Coolpix S8100 compared to Canon S95 and why Nikon needs a serious compact camera

I am very particular when it comes to small (pocketable) cameras and I wanted to find out how good (or bad) the top of the line Coolpix S8100 really is. I ignored the P7000 because it is in a different category – I wanted to see what a “real” point and shoot Nikon camera is all about. A natural choice for my comparison was the Canon S95 which is the top of the line compact camera currently offered by Canon. I know this is not  fair fight since the Canon S95 can shoot RAW, has manual mode and costs $100 more. I hope with the next Coolpix announcement on February 9th Nikon will address those issues in the upcoming 24-100mm f/1.8 compact camera the way Olympus did with their new ZX-1.

Hacking the Digital: Stills in Motion (guest post by Andrew Kornylak)

Today’s guest post is by Andrew Kornylak. You probably remember some of his stop motion videos taken with a Nikon D3 I posted back in 2009. The topis he will cover today is “Hacking the Digital: Stills in Motion”:

Before I “became” a professional photographer, I was a software developer. Windows applications, wireless devices, game software, web… This was the late 90s, and we hacked everything, pushing beyond design limits. We rolled our own script languages, designed database engines from the ground up, dissected device drivers, and programmed using interrupts and bit operations. It was awesome. A small alpine-style team of programmers could go anywhere and do anything, applying their craft and creativity to this magical hardware. Create a server to host interactive games to half a billion Chinese cell phone users? Yeah, we can hack that out in our garage.

But all good things come to an end. Eventually the hackers got so good at it that their hacks became the standard, and soon all you had to do was take a class on it and learn how to pull the levers. Projects became so big that it took an army of lever-pullers to do anything cool.

I left that world about the same time digital cameras started hitting the shelves. Hacking photos is pretty much the same: These magical little machines can do much more than what they were designed for. Even better: you can see the results, right there, in a picture. Or in a bunch of pictures.

I’m going to share a couple examples of hacking the digital camera. First I use multiple cameras to create motion in a still image. Then I use one camera and multiple stills to create motion.

Best Buy adopts Nikon’s internal numbering scheme (Q740, Q750)

Few months back I posted a screenshot from an internal Best Buy message that listed a Nikon product under the code name Q750. The Qxxx notation is an internal Nikon numbering scheme – basically every Nikon DSLR camera has a code name that is different than the actual product name. It was suggested that the Q750 could be the code name for the Nikon D7000.

Recently a new code showed up in Best Buy’s system – Q740:

Nikon instant rebates extended in the US *updated*

Update: Nikon D7000 is now in stock and can be used in combination with the Nikon instant rebates.

Update #2: Nikon Canada will also have a rebate program – 80 CAD off any dual lens kit (effective till March 31st).

Nikon sent out a memo to US dealers today that the current Nikon instant rebates will be extended till February 26th, 2011. Multiple lens rebates can be combined with the purchase of one qualifying Nikon DSLR body. The Nikon rebate program started on March 1st, 2010. It is important to note that almost all other manufacturers have ended their rebate programs after the holidays. Several readers emailed me about a potential price increase on Nikon products on February 1st. I don’t think this will happen (at least not on February 1st).

The rumor is that Nikon’s warehouses in Canada have been out of D700 since early December. They have no indication if any new shipments are on the way.

Many fake Nikon D800 pictures and specs are available on the Net

Since there are many new NikonRumors readers who are sending me tips and emails about a Nikon D800 camera being listed on several Chinese e-commerce sites, I have to remind you that those specs and images are fake and have been around pretty much from the time the D700 was announced back in 2008. I would say their credibility is 0%. I have covered those listings several times in the past, there is no need to go into details again.

I still encourage you to keep sending me any interesting information you find. I am also still interested in future guest posts. If you have an interesting Nikon related topic, drop me a line. The first time I got over 200 emails and only two guest posts materialized.
