New Nikon D7000 firmware v1.02? *updated*

Update: this is probably a false alarm – the 1.002 version on the D7000 is for the built in lens corrections database:

I received two different tips that a new Nikon D7000 firmware v1.02 will be released soon. Some of the included improvements should be a fix for AF backfocus, corrected aperture calculation with zoom lenses in LiveView mode and more.

New Nikon D7000 units were reportedly shipped to BestBuy with the new v1.02 firmware.

The previous D7000 firmware update v1.01 was released in December, 2010.

Sendai earthquake update

Yesterday Nikon had to shut down their production at two plants again after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake (source):

“Nikon suspended production at two plants in Miyagi, the prefecture closest to the earthquake’s epicenter off the coast of northeastern Japan. The company is assessing damage at the plants, said Sayaka Suzuki, a spokeswoman for the Tokyo-based camera maker.”

Nikon will not use lower-grade glass from China (source):

“Analysts say that although Chinese firms such as CDGM Glass Company Ltd and Hubei New Huaguang are expanding production of lower-grade optical glass and could make up for supply shortfalls in that area, SLR makers Canon and Nikon will likely continue to source from Japan to avoid compromising quality.”

Nikon products lifespan according to NPS

Nikon NPS in the Czech Republic has an interesting and detailed list of photo equipment that can be registered with NPS (Nikon Professional Services). More interesting is the date listed next to each product, after which the product can no longer be registered with NPS. The speculation is that with a little bit of imagination, you could use this list to get an idea of what will be replaced when. Some products are already close to their “end-of-NPS-life-status”: AF-S DX 12-24/4G, AF 14 f/2.8D, TC-14E II. Here is the full list:

Digital cameras:

  • D3S – November 2014
  • D3X – December 2013
  • D3 – September 2013
  • D2X – February 2010
  • D2Xs – June 2011
  • D700 – July 2013
