I can now confirm that Nikon has scheduled press events in several different countries for next week, which is an indications for a major new product introduction. The exact announcement date for the US could be as early as Tuesday night (February 19th) but most likely everything will happen on Wednesday night.
Nikon Thailand sent invitations for a press event on February 21, 2013. I do not expect any new products to be announced in February – this press conference could be for something else. In addition, Thursday is a rather unusual day for Nikon to introduce new products. Of course this press conference could be for the long awaited D7000 replacement, which was rumored to be announced before April this year.

A major new Nikon US rebate program will be introduced this Saturday at midnight. I do not have all the details yet, but many lenses (including some of the Nikon’s best selling glass) will be up to several hundred dollars off. You will not be required to buy a body in order to qualify for the new rebates. Stay tuned for more details. My guess is that those new rebates are the result of the company’s bad third quarter financial report – Nikon is probably trying to move inventory in order to meet their goals. The current combo rebates will remain active for now.

Nikon Corporation (Makoto Kimura, President) is pleased to announce the establishment of P.T. Nikon Indonesia in Jakarta. This new sales and service subsidiary will be launched to fortify sales of imaging products, beginning with digital cameras, and to enhance after-sales service in Indonesia. Operations commenced on February 1, 2013.
