The next Nikon ZR firmware to include those four upgrades

As several readers have already noted in my previous post, I added two new videos from the NAB show that describe the upcoming Nikon ZR firmware update – here is what to expect:

  • Focus peaking in R3D (Red Code RAW): currently unavailable in R3D mode; this is being added as a high-priority item based on direct user feedback.
  • Log 3G10 tone mode in H.265: a major new capability that brings RED’s Log 3G10 color science to the H.265 codec. This should deliver smaller file sizes, longer recording times, and more grading flexibility without forcing users into full RAW.
  • General H.265 quality improvements (“H.265 fix”): aimed at making the codec a more practical and cost-effective alternative to RAW recording, especially given rising solid-state media prices.
  • LUT syncing to HDMI output: camera-applied LUTs will now be passed through to external monitors/recorders via HDMI for smoother on-set workflows.

The Nikon ZR will get many firmware updates next year
