Considering the bad reviews online for this camera and I am a devoted Nikon shooter, this camera should be under $ 200.00.

    • Eric Calabros

What bad review? Many reviewers/photographers like this small and yet capable camera, the reason they complain is just its price

      • iamlucky13

Yep. I just looked up the original MSRP again – it was $599 for the J3 and 10-30 kit.

Technically, it’s a camera that should easily outperform the P7800, which is $550. But the body design never resonated with customers, so within a year, the less popular colors were already on sale for 1/2 of MSRP, and the more popular colors 2/3 of MSRP.

At this price, even refurbished, it’s pretty tempting. Image quality should be almost as good as the Sony RX100 (similar sensor size), but for a lot less than $800, and with interchangeable lenses. That’s entry level point and shoot pricing! However, the RX100 will pocket better because of its collapsible lens.

I agree with most of what you said but I need to add one small correction. Even though these are labelled as refurbished, they are actually brand new cameras in a refurb box. I know that because I bought one last week when this deal came online. It’s brand new. You can’t argue with that price for a brand new Nikon with interchangeable lens.

          • iamlucky13

That would be sweet if true, but how do you know it was brand new, or that all of the kits shipping are brand new and that you weren’t simply lucky?

Also, I assume it still had the 90 day refurb warranty, not the 1 year warranty Nikon has for new cameras?

            • KT

The EXIF metadata shows that the first shot I took was number 1. Everything was in its plastic wrappings and clearly never been used before. Maybe I was just lucky and got a new one, or maybe Nikon was simply offloading unsold merchandise at fire-sale prices. Who knows.

            • No, I think in the past 1-2 years Nikon USA started to sell brand new gear as refurbished in order to clear their inventory.

            • Eric Calabros

as admin said they are selling brand new as refurb, but the number 1 in exif is not an evidence of that. They can easily reset that counter

          Except the RX100 is a real camera…

    • RMJ

      It is under 200

    Ordered mine, stat!

    Not available.

    Missed it.

This price, is about the “right” price. I got my V1 2 lens kit combo a couple years back at that big Nikon fire sale for like $400. Once again, the “right” price. lol Not $1,200.
It’s been an amazing performer and is actually an amazing video camera too.

I’m still waiting for the $179 Nikon V2 fire sale. That might get me to buy it. It’s a nice camera, just too expensive.

  • Should I switch?

this video makes me want to switch. with great camera technology out there and here I am stuck with my D90

My brain is saying Sony but my heart is a Nikon

I don’t know please help ty

He lost me @ “I went to my local Best Buy….” LOL

    • I looked at this guy’s website and honestly, his style of photography doesn’t demand a D4 or D810 or whatever. It’s not a knock, it’s simply that the type of images he does. Could do a lot of his work with a point-n-shoot and it wouldn’t look that different.

Look at it this way. You can always say that you left Nikon and switched to Sony or Canon like this other pro guy who said in front of the audience that he switched to Canon because Canon is flat like a MacBook Pro, and that was accepted like a professional excuse. Btw….D90 IQ is still better than that of 60D, 70D and 7D. So maybe a D90 is stuck with you and not the other way.

The video makes you want to switch? It makes me want to fall asleep. He lost me when he started talking about not wanting to carry an expensive camera in Detroit.

  • AnthonyH

Damn. That’s twice that I’ve missed it.

    • Jim

      Try again now.

      • AnthonyH

Many thanks!!! The third time was the charm. This’ll probably be someone’s Christmas gift!

  • AnthonyH

Now, when the Nikon 1 V3 goes on sale…I can upgrade my Nikon 1 V1! These are great small cameras; focus very fast. I wish the image quality was better; it’s not as good a micro-4/3, for example. But for ease of carrying around with a solid feel, I prefer the V1 to any point and shoot. Nikon should price these cameras more appropriately; I haven’t yet paid full price for any 1-series camera or 1-series lens; everything has been on effectively a close-out sale.
