The latest Nikon patents

Nikon filed patent 2012-155026 in Japan for a lens adapter with adjustable flange back. The helicoid ring allows to further close focus the lens (similar adapter already exists for using Leica lenses with Sony NEX camera). In this patent the flange back will automatically be adjusted by the camera (CPU).

Patent 2012-156644 is for reducing motion blur:

  • Object recognition is performed for each frame, face recognition is used to detect the direction of movement.
  • The camera automatically zooms when the distance to the subject is changed to offset the blur.
  • The camera can also detect when the subject is stationary and then takes an image.

      Oh, you don’t want a compact digital body that autofocuses with manual rangefinder lenses? Cause I do. CPU-driven adjustable flange back = awesome.

      • no i want a normal digital rangefinder which is as small as it gets and have fullframe sensor. AF they can keep on P&S or SLRs

    That way we could use older Nikon S mount lens and F mount as well!

  • This is an interesting development. Most current mirrorless bodies either have a short flange-to-sensor distance (m4/3, Canon), requiring an adapter to fit older lenses. Pentax kept the distance the same, so no adapter is required – at a cost of body size. What will Nikon choose to do?

    Well, this patent suggests they might have a moving flange (or sensor) that would allow them to have both a standard F-mount and a “micro-F-mount in a single body – no adapter required.

    This is pure speculation on my part. But it is common to patent one item with an important feature, then use the feature in a different assembly – thus denying the competition a clear idea of what the true target device is.

      I agree, this indicates Nikon is working on some new mount, likely for an apsc ml system. Current F lenses will likely require such an adapter.

  • Sadly, there’s no adapter that can make motor-less AF lenses autofocus on bodies without a focus drive motor. I like the idea that that this patent is camouflage for the real intended purpose!

    I wish they would release an affordable 35mm f1.8 for full frame.

      the 35/2.0 is actually the cheapest ff-lens from Nikon. What’s wrong with it? I have it and i love to use it.

          The 35 f2.0 FF is soft Wide open that is what is wrong with it…

            Yeah, and the corners are mush even when stopped down even on DX

          • I’m happy with the shots I’ve gotten from my copy open wide.

          • there are many flying around but when you let it repair or calibrate it is not wide open. Keep in mind that most bodies are derailed and need AF adjust for fast lenses.
            My is very sharp wide open. Corners not so, but i don’t need them sharp wide open and at f4 they are ok.

    The real idea is one I sent to Nikon last year. Basically a VR adapter to put on any lens…. I was in NDA but now the patent is out I can talk.

      I had been saying almost the same thing, as of… about a month or two ago. They need to make a vr tele- converter. The long focal lengths are where you need the vr for, especially since you are then off a stop or two. The shorter lengths, not so much. It would save some people a bundle and the rest of their lens lineup could be smaller, lighter, and more reliable.
      But I don’t this thing is what either of us has advocated.
