So spill it. What are the details of the specs? TYIA.

    • Brian

      Exactly!!!

  • doge

    lol “turbocharged” workflow.

    • Knut-Sverre Horn

Now that’s a bummer. I expected it to be at least twin-turbocharged.

      • doge

They’ll save that for the D6.

      • PhilK

Never settle: I say go for massively-parallel 100x turbochargers.

      • Riley Escobar

I prefer supercharged, no need to wait for the turbo to spool up.

        • Michiel953

          Twin scroll is fine

        • So I guess no possibility of a biturbo.

        • BlueBomberTurbo

          Wastes battery life. :p

          • PhilK

Supplemental power provided by a hot-air recovery system fueled by NR comments. 😀

            • BlueBomberTurbo

Overload! Danger to the manifold! XD

      • Aldo

Yes.. but as with the f-35 they had to make it single processor so that it could be more stealthy.

      • Tim Burke

Newbs, don’t you know single turbo > twin turbo?

    • R0gue_4cid

I had to chuckle as well at the comment

    • vFunct

      I’m most interested in this.

Please give us a 10Gbit ethernet to directly connect and download images onto our computer at 14fps raw.

BTW For 4k 60FPS Raw, we need 40Gbit ethernet.

      • Aldo

        Yes and Linux compatible…

        • Well, I don’t have a Dx camera nor an UT-1 for D8xx, but shouldn’t Ethernet just work? Maybe needs DHCP (or has a built-in DHCP server), but HTTP/FTP should just work on top of that.

Even PTP kind of works with libgphoto2…

          • Aldo

I think he meant wired ethernet

          • vFunct

wired ethernet at 1gbps wouldn’t be enough to capture raw at full frame rates. We need 10gbps.

            • PhilK

And 10gbps transceivers are probably still too large/power-hungry to put in something like a DSLR.

            • manhattanboy

They could have at least built in wifi

            • PhilK

WiFi is slow, unreliable and insecure in many cases. And it is a moving-target with new specs coming frequently. I would rather that they build a flexible interface or modular port that WiFi or Bluetooth adapters (OEM or 3rd-party) could be easily attached. But Nikon generally doesn’t do it that way, if they have an external device it is usually very large and very expensive..

With built-in ethernet and USB ports one can connect a generic WiFi adapter/bridge, but it won’t have the camera integration functionality a dedicated adapter could provide unless (on the USB port in particular) Nikon opens their API.

            • vFunct

10Gbps are only a couple of watts now, and should be suitable for a big dSLR.

            • PhilK

The silly thing about an ethernet port on a DSLR is that to comply with the specification the device has to be able to send the signal intact for a distance of 100 meters, which is almost never likely to be necessary for a DSLR, and greatly increases the power requirements.

Whereas the USB spec only requires support of a cable length of up to about 3 meters or so. (~5m for USB 2.0) I don’t think you can make something with a more limited distance range and still call it Ethernet. (While some “green” ethernet switches these days will detect if a shorter cable is attached and lower the transmit power to save energy, they still have to be able to transmit the full distance to meet the spec)

  • ShaoLynx

WOW, Peter! That’s incredible. You don’t miss a thing.
Eight years of Nikon hunting sure made you the best in the business!
Great catch! And thanks for the heads up.

    • Indeed, awesome. Can’t wait now… specs, give me specs!

  • Game is on 🙂

  • PhilK

Always handy to have offices in New Zealand that operate in the future. 😀

  • FountainHead

Technology will advance, but I doubt I’ll ever need a better camera than this.

    • Eno

Of course you’ll never need a better camera than this…until D6 comes out! LOL

      • Clifford Martin

You mean the D5s, which will be released before the D6.

        • I hope they’ll skip the D5s.

          • Sawyerspadre

            Why would they?

            • Because the cost of R&D for a D5s could be higher than the profit from sales.
              Cameras are a declining market.
Camera updates have been too iterative lately.

            • PhilK

Which is why camera components including sensors should be modular. But A) it’s hard to keep size/reliability/efficiency up when these things are interchangeable, and B) camera manufacturers depend on customers constantly replacing their cameras.

I do think that upgradeable software modules would be very do-able and a possible nice revenue stream for Nikon. But only if they could come up with a reliable way to prevent cheating/piracy. That’s probably the most difficult part.

        • T.I.M

you mean D5x (with the D810,000 square root’s 48MP sensor)

          • T.I.M

            D3=12MP
            D3x=24MP
            D5=20MP (shame)
            D5x=48MP

        • Eno

There is little difference between half generations this is why I didn’t mentioned the S version. 🙂

  • juanillo_76

    It has begun!!

    • Aldo

The reign of the 1dx has ended… the time of the d5 has come….

      • PhilK

For a few months until Canon’s next announcement. 😛

      • Nikos Delhanidis

probably rather a Nikon 1Dx at last arrived, opportunities rise to get at last an 1Dx at lower prices 😛

    • outkasted

      indeed

  • Riley Escobar

So what is this “phenomenal autofocus system” ?

    • Aldo

So phenomenal even a caveman can take tack sharp photos.

  • now fb page is unreachable… 🙁

    • yes, I think they deleted their entire Facebook page, not only the D5 post

      • PhilK

Facebook, the little I have used it (only when helping clients on their pages) is extremely annoying that way. Trying to delete content oftentimes seems to take an act of Congress.

Had a client that had some info on their page that they didn’t want people to see (basically, someone trolling them in comments), and even after deleting the entire page, Facebook creates a “default page” with the garbage still there, that you CANNOT delete. You have to literally kill your entire account to get rid of it. (And I’m not sure even then..)

        • wow, I have deleted posts before on NR facebook page but I never bothered checking if they are really deleted

          • PhilK

Well I’m not sure if it applies to deletion of a single post or not, I think the stuff I was referring-to are comments on the main page. I’m no FB expert.

But I do know that FB is basically in the data-collection business, and if there are any external links to content, they don’t like to remove it, regardless whether the entity it technically applies to should seem to get priority. With a company site, they will create an automatic or default page for the company even if you remove the one you created yourself, which drove me nuts.

  • MichaelSNC

Did they get any screen shots of the specs? Getting my credit card dusted off.

    • No, they did not post any specs. Come back here in 7-8 hours for all the details.

      • MichaelSNC

        Roger that!

      • T.I.M

in 7-8 hours I’ll be dreaming about my D30 (square)

  • ragamofyn

lol. Nikon is the WORST for unintentional leaks. or is Nikon actually the BEST at intention leaks? either way, it gets us talking… but does that translate into more units sold? unlikely.

    • I am pretty sure Nikon doesn’t intentionally leak info. I think Sony used to do it before and then they stopped which explains the lack of any Sony leaks lately.

  • olidie

Hmm, the third fn button in the middle is not visible. Just covered by the lense or gone?

  • R0gue_4cid

8k capable d6 in two years time wouldn’t rule it out

  • Gearsau

Looking at the motor cycle photos, I suggest that Nikon get a better photographer, or, a new advertising agency.

    • those are just very low res picture, let’s wait for the real marketing material

      • Brian

20.1 Mp 12 fps dual XQD cards what else is there to know?

        • Aldo

          Dispenses a sandwich every 1000 shutter actuations….

          • Banan Tarr

Careful eating that sandwich meat though, it’s RAW 😉

            • T.I.M

you beat me on that one !
              :o)

        • How well the AF works.. :). Seriously, I want an AF for dummies..

    • manhattanboy

I totally agree with those motorcycle pics. It looks like the camera missed focus on that action sequence or the photographer was undecided between panning for background motion with a low shutter speed and freezing the action for sharp details.

  • stormwatch

I hope it will be a real 4k, not some funny mumbo jumbo video implementation with tons of ridiculous litimations like before.

  • bgbs

Does anybody see anything in those pics that is considered groundbreaking? I’ve seen these photos before, I think from someone’s iPhone. I could be wrong.

  • Davidvictormeldrew Idontbeliev

Looking forward to it – although may have to save for it for quite few months or wait for the tech to trickle down to D850/D900’ish camera.

  • br0xibear

Quick D4s size comparison based on matching strap lugs.

    • br0xibear

“Should the Nikon D5 be announced at CES 2016, Nikon will be getting 2016 off to a better start, targeting professionals who demand nothing but the best in what should be remembered is an Olympic year. Could the D5 possibly be the first Nikon camera to feature 4K movie recording? Fingers crossed Nikon
will excite us with more products at CES 2016 – the fact they’re flying journalists from the UK to Las Vegas specially for CES 2016 suggests there could be plenty to report on so watch this space.”

      http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/latest/photo-news/ap-gears-up-for-ces-2016-67324#b3q59iKu3Qha1LxH.99

      • Wow, Nikon is paying for journalists to go to Vegas again? I guess they are not in that big of a financial trouble. They used to do this before but I heard that they stopped it.

        • I would be surprised for them to be doing that well; I rather suspect they _need_ this launch to go well, so they’re throwing all the cards on the table.

        • br0xibear

Yeah, I was surprised by that too.
It’s a lot of expense and in stark contrast to the D4s, which was housed in a glass box last time.
Maybe there’s more than just a D5 and flash ?

          • yes, there should be more: compact cameras with 1″ sensor, actions cams – pretty much what I covered in the last few weeks

          • Scott M.

            D500 DX

        • outkasted

Well Nikon knows what it needs to do to get the internet buzzing. You put in at a 1/500 flash sync, 4K, 100+k iso, 12-14fps, new autofocus….etc… Not only will i buy it but a 600mm/f4 will need to be purchased. The local autobahn society will be seeing me on a regular

          • TheInconvenientRuth

May I ask what a “local autobahn society” is and what it does?

            • PhilK

Sounds like people who like to both conserve nature and drive really fast on the highway. With electric cars I guess. 😀

            • TheInconvenientRuth

I thik it is a society for people who collect stretches of German Autobahn. Makes sense that if you have a mile of Autobahn in your display cabinet, you’d need a D5 and 600/f4 to shoot it with.

            • outkasted

OH SNAP!!! LOL just seeing this lmfao…’Audubon’ is what i meant. lawd’ i need to go back school

            • TheInconvenientRuth

I had to Google Audubon and while it is commendable, I still think the “local Autobahn Society” is far more exciting.

    • outkasted

you should win a nice prize for this.

      • br0xibear

The D5 image is a bit fuzzy, but it does seem a bit more compact compared to the D4s, not long before we know, unless some other site jumps the gun again and gives more away, lol.

    • PhilK

      Thanks for that comparison.

I did a quick spec check on the Canon 1Dx compared to the D4s, and based on the maximum dimensions, the 1Dx is about 6% smaller in volume than the D4s. (Mostly in depth) But that could just be because of one small protrusion like the eyepiece or something, not very scientific to base it on maximum dimensions.

On the other hand, the D4s is about 23% lighter than the 1Dx. I don’t know if the specs include the standard battery on both.

If true, Nikon could build on that with their new flagship and possibly leap Canon’s flagship in a sort of unexpected way: by being significantly smaller and lighter than the competition. 😉

    • Michiel953

Looks better, slightly more compact, slightly more camera like.

  • Davidvictormeldrew Idontbeliev

Excitement overload tomorrow!! – sorry for the useless posting…

    • Aldo

No need to apologize… You fit right in =]

  • bgbs

Isn’t Nikno supposed to unveil D5 after 1DX II?

    • Why? I expected the D5 to be announced at CES for a long time.

      • bgbs

I thought that’s been their history

      • Jeffry De Meyer

Why at ces, this isn’t a consumer product.

        • they did the same thing with the D4 and D4s – it’s just an easy access for the press

          • TheInconvenientRuth

It makes sense as they probably sell more flagship Dx bodies to wealthy amateurs than working professionals.

            • but whoever has this lens will not update to the new version

            • TheInconvenientRuth

              Lens? You mean body?

            • yes, wrong post. Sorry

      • Brian

Looks like they Gamed us..no announcement.

        • the CES show starts on Wednesday, maybe the announcement will be tomorrow

  • Aldo

    I AM : Strobist

    • Eric Duminil

      Could be Joe McNally.

  • longzoom

Nice machine, but I like the wording: “Prematurely”, “By mistake” so on… Come on, guys, we are not kids there…

  • Eric

The “I am Visionary” shot looks very Joe McNally. He usually does camera testing for Nikon.

    • Eric Duminil

Exactly my thought. Ditto for the band on rooftop.
BTW, a Nikon full frame with 1/1000s X-Sync would be great!

      • benji2505

Right, two typical McNally pictures. The forest background is a let down though, at least in these low res pictures. So far the D4 (promo shots) were better.

      • outkasted

Now that would be killer dude!!!!!

        i miss that D70 sync

    • Yes, given that there will be a new flash as well.

    • AYWY

      Ha! Wanted to this too.

    • Ray Justice

Yes and the soccer and motorcycle pics look like Dave Black. Maybe we have two pro’s doing the new promo for the D5… hum…

  • MonkeySpanner

So then we should expect an announcement….when? Wednesday?

    • T.I.M

      NR said tonight !

      • MonkeySpanner

        Ah, ok

      • Scott M.

    • Brian

      February!

  • D700s

    Decisions decisions…

  • shane

Where do we purchase this new imaging machine to be as close to the front of the line as possible?

  • BlueBomberTurbo

    Hot or not, I’m sure it’ll blow…

  • superdan_x

This may be an odd thing for some people, But I hope the new line of cameras come with USB-C

    • This would be an improvement for sure.

    • outkasted

usb-c i need to look that up

      • superdan_x

Its the new usb standard. We just got usb-3, but this is much more advanced. I personally would love to never worry about flipping the stupid cable around anymore, looking for the right orientation. It’s on the new Macbook and chromebook pixel

    • whisky

      USB-C is just an interface.

what we’d really want is USB 3.1 with 10 Gbp/s transfer speeds — or twice USB 3.0.

  • very interesting, can we take this as carry on or do we need to check it in a firearm case

  • Nikos Delhanidis

This new AF module and the processing power to push 20MP files at around 10 fps i think will find their way also to DX, and i doubt the receiver will be of the 7k series. I have a feeling the holy grail D400 is to appear within 2016 😛

    • MonkeySpanner

The one series is pushing 20mp files at 60fps.

      • Nikos Delhanidis

Its no secret that i like Canon 😛

  • D700s

I’m really surprised there aren’t 300 or more comments by now. Tomorrow morning will be a different story.

    • MonkeySpanner

All the comments will be on the announcement post. Or should I say all the complaints.

      • Yes, comments like “epic fail” and “I got mine last week and it won’t focus with the lens cap on”.

  • AYWY

And you know Sony could announce a A6000 successor on the same day with something like 20 fps, hawking “super improved AF”, “superior full screen AF coverage” and stuff like that. 😛
If I’m Sony that’s what I’ll do. If Nikon management is even remotely competent they should know that’s what Sony will probably do.
Ah well, let’s see how well the D5 weathers the competition and scrutinity of its user base.

    • MonkeySpanner

A top shelf Sony aps-c body should be 20fps at 24mp with super duper AF. BTW, that is also what the Nikon 1 system should be – everything that it is, but DX sensor. So if Nikon gets one-uped they can only blame themselves.

    • PhilK

The problem for Sony is that as the largest OEM manufacturer of image sensors, if they try really hard to compete head-to-head with their sensor customers, they run the risk of pushing them to find other sources for their sensors.

At the moment there aren’t that many high-end sensor manufacturers so Sony might be able to get away with that for a while, but I don’t think that situation will last forever – far from it.

      • Justtakethepicture

Sony have had no trouble walking the line so far, I doubt that will change. At least, they seem to have saved the newest tech for their own cameras this time round, before filtering it out to their corporate customers.

Being the largest manufacturer of image sensors isn’t a problem. I’m sure plenty of other manufacturers would like to have that ‘problem’,

    • Thom Hogan

Technically, I could announce a byThom ILC with 30 fps, super AF, “and stuff like that.” Making a marketing statement isn’t the same as making a competitive product. Sony isn’t targeting Nikon’s D5 with their A6100/A7000. Heck, that would undermine their own A7 series ;~).

However, one reason why I don’t like the idea of spending well over a million dollars to be at an old-fashioned trade show and announce a product is the “noise” factor. At a show like CES, there’s a lot of noise, plus a risk that the press decides to anoint something you’re not doing as the “it factor” for 2016.

Like many other things Nikon is doing, their marketing is still executing 1980’s COMDEX-style.

  • Brett A. Wheeler

Only if Jerry Jones isn’t in charge!

  • outkasted

eh! its 12:00am Atlantic Time…what gives?

  • D700s

I got my D4 from a brick and mortar store the week it was released. Contacted them today and they can’t promise me I’ll get the same treatment with the D5. Evidently many folks are waiting for it.

  • D700s

Any guesses on when it will be available/ship?

  • Any new date? Usually you don’t get things wrong this close :). What happened?

  • Gerard Roulssen

The dynamic range in the pic with the girl in yellow and the orchestra … damn, me want!

  • Padaung

I’m intrigued by the ‘turbocharged workflow’. Hopefully this will mean a basic wi-fi module which can be easily connected to a computer/tablet/phone is built in with hassle free connection of the devices by NFC. A more advanced ‘bolt-on’ wi-fi module would still be available with more advanced features for those who need it.

I’d love it if my camera instantly streamed screen res files instantly to a tablet (Surface Pro 4) next to me so no waiting for the files to download before a quick review. I then select the images I wish to share further from the screen res previews and pull the higher res file from the camera for full editing.

USB-C and 1/500th sync, wider AF spread and radio off camera flash control would be my the other items on my wish list.

…and then for these features to be built into cameras other than the flagship device too (speaking of which, I wish Nikon enabled the menu item to ‘virtually’ lock the command dials for the aperture and shutter so you don’t accidentally change settings on their lower end cameras – such a useful feature for me anyway!).

  • Borgar Tessem

The D5 will surely be announced on Wednesday

    • HappySoul In

      Thank you!

  • Not enough for me to change from my D4s
