Military grade “Desert Mirage Lizard” painted Nikon gear

Custom painted Nikon equipment is nothing new - we've already seen white and Bruce Lee versions of the D3, pimpyourcam.com has also done few nice custom D4 and Nikkor lens designs. Alexy Joffre Frangieh (who also did the D3 hail torture video) did something different - he used a military grade "Desert Mirage Lizard" paint for some of his Nikon camera and lenses. He manually airbrushed the gear without disassembling it! Additional images can be found on Alexy's Facebook page (click on images for larger view):

I doubt this has any real value in protecting the gear but the resell value loss, warranty loss, and overall looking like an idiot are 100% real.

  • Ronan

He could have pulled it off… where he ‘masks’ the lettering/logo he should have painted and then went over it with black/red/white paint for the letters (depending what lettering/logo he is doing all over the camera).

As for the lend hood, the inside should have been left alone.

Simply done that and it would have been pretty cool.

WHY??? Should have been out taking pictures and not wasting so much time painting.

  • whmitty

For crying in a drink of soda water give the guy a break. He did a stellar job even though many view such work as superfluous. If Nikon paid as good attention to detail in QC as this fellow has in painting his gear perhaps the perpetual whining in this forum would reduce by half.

    • uhg

this makes no sense. Sure the guy has heart and talent but our views have nothing to do with Nikons QC.

      • WH Mitty

Granted this thread has nothing to do with QC. I was trying to compare (not very well) the intensity of ridicule for this guy’s painting of his gear to the deserved lambasting of Nikon’s botched releases of cameras (sensor/focus problems) out of the box. I suppose it’s human nature to want to critique no matter the triviality of the subject. That’s why it’s called a forum,eh? In any case you have a point.

why don’t you buy a Pentax? they have a lot of toy-looking cameras like this for regular price.

  • Wally

    Looks like lensturd.

    What a dumb ass

  • militarygradedickhead

This is a completely useless and unsupported “upgrade”. The only thing accomplished is creating an ugly camera kit. It is mind boggling that he continued on to each item. You have to wonder if at any point he was doubtful or did he have major wood the entire time?

This is not military grade it is playing “war” in the backyard with your kids grade.

i was so glad, when this post disappeared from the front page. camera and lenses look like poo. for a slow news-day this was okayish content for NR, but it lasted kinde long on the frontpage…

  • retard

ugliest thing ever, and what’s even worst is the guy post the pictures thinking it looks cool !

  • Emmett

I think it’s hilarious that there are douchebags making comments like “WHY??? Should have been out taking pictures and not wasting so much time painting.”

Here’s an idea retard, instead of criticizing people on the internet why aren’t YOU out taking pictures?

And also the people complaining about resale value.

Guess what? Some of us actually USE our cameras and don’t care about resale value. It’s not YOUR f’n camera. Don’t worry about the resale value.

  • drone

I hope he doesn’t get taken out by a drone when he is out shooting.

  • bgbs

    That’s called diehard militant fanboyism

  • bobby2socks

Why keep the logos? The first i’d do is cover those. Does anybody need to know what the company name and model number is?

  • Alfonso FotoNovedades

Very nice job! Whoever painting inside of the lens shade wasn´t a good idea, just saying!!

I guess this guy never heard of “Lens Coat”….

  • Andrey Simkin

    nice))
look to my 5d mark II “wedding edition” ))))

  • Adam Dickerson

I think the job looks kick ass. Personalizing your equipment for fun or for purpose is worth it regardless of what others may think, and it is different. You can’t just go to the store and ‘add to cart’ with this color option. Totally custom even if it is Jack-Ass custom, even better! If you want it to be perfect seal it in a glass case and never use it. Lets face it, it is meant to be used and surface wear and defects are part of it. Look in the mirror and tell me what you see!

  • Sten

Wow, talking about a bunch of haters. The guy did a good job on the gear, if you don’t like it, just say it; don’t bag him for it. Sounds more like a bunch of whiners here.
