New Nikon F-mount adapter for Coolpix cameras to be announced together with the D3200

Nikon will announce a new adapter that will allow you to attach F-mount DSLR lenses to any Coolpix camera. The idea is similar to this adapter that lets you attach Nikkor lenses to your iPhone. The new Nikon adapter will have a F-mount on one side for attaching the lens and a very strong Neodymium magnet on the other side for attaching the Coolpix camera (click on images for larger view):

Those two pictures show the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens attached to the new Coolpix S30 camera. The exact name/model of the adapter is covered on one of the images - only the "NIK" portion is visible:

The price is expected to be $99. The adapter is scheduled to be announced together with the D3200 later this month. Due to the small sensor size of the Coolpix cameras, the crop factor will be somewhere in the 5x range (depending on the actual sensor size). This will turn the 70-200mm lens into a 350-1000mm monster!

  • WHY!!!

Wow really? Why? Why would anyone want to pay for an adapter to stick $100 camera onto lenses that even the kit 18-55mm lens is about 150% of the cost of the camera

    • Tom

      And it’s April 1st. FML.

I found it: the NR april fools day joke.
    Uhm, right?
BTW: I’m sticking to my 1V1.

  • wantmypresent

    nice try anyway :)

  • Zoot

VR switched on, on a tripod-mounted lens? Don’t let Thom Hogan see this.

  • Abhinav

    Happy APRIL FOOL :D

    PINK!?!?!?
Attached to the black 70-200 . . . that just looks wrong.

$99 adaptor so I can shoot my SLR lenses at x5 crop?
Well, I’m sure it will sell. More importantly, it will give Nikon SLR lens owners a reason to buy Nikon point-n-shoots rather than the competition.

  • Marcus Stoneman

Been waiting all day and here it is!!!

    Where can I pre-order me one :)

    • PeterO

Forget it Paul. There are millions ahead of you.

  • Bill

Mine is already on pre-order/back order from B&H. Ordered 2 of them. They said they expect to ship right after my D800. Think I will get it early next week.

    Cheers

    • GregS

I just picked one up at Best Buy.

  • Fishguy

Ahhh- If only the D3200 were an April Fools joke as well!

Bring on a replacement for my D300!

    • das zebra

      +1 !

  • Eric

I canceled my D800 preorder for this; the lens is all that matters anyways. My L26 can be perfect now!

  • Ken Rockwell

    Fucking kidding me?!
I’d rather starve my family than review this!

    • Zoot

      Outrageous!

      And very funny.

  • Fishyindenmark

I told you guys in the other post about the D3200 a few days ago. ITS ALL ABOUT APRIL FOOLS DAY. WHY DONT YOU READ!!!!

  • Old Amsterdam

Funny but true, a lens is more important than the camera.

  • Julian

Surely they’ll do a pink version of the 70-200 f/2.8 to match.

    • Iris Chrome

THAT would have been a good April fools ;-)

  • Robyn

I pre-ordered with my local camera shop already, I am not trusting B&H with this one. Hopefully I will have it before B&H delivers my D800, if so I can try it out with my Nikon P6000 and can then cancel my D800 order. Since P > D, and 6000 also > 800 thus P+6000 > D+800 any day.

    I love you Nikon.

  • Hom Thogan

    Nice try…

  • defmar

Neodymium magnets larger than a few centimeters are strong enough to cause injuries to body parts pinched between two magnets, or a magnet and a metal surface, even causing broken bones.

    • FDF

Not to mention totally screwing with the electronics near it, like let’s say, a Coolpix camera :)

  • Foolishcfo

Wow! They’ll do anything to avoid having to come out with a D300s successor! Is the market really larger for attaching crappy Coolpix cameras to high quality lenses than for attaching them to a super high quality D400? It would seem that people buying Coolpix crap look for low cost and a small footprint. Just how many adapters can the market support?

  • Duke of Edinburgh

Spiffing, does it make tea, by the way?

  • RW

It looks no more ridiculous than a NEX with a long lens.

    • peterw

      right
exactly reading the point above this idea rose…

I guess it won’t take very long, thought.

  • distanted

The only downside to this is you’ll need one quart of Coolpix Pink to make your lenses match…otherwise you’d just look foolish.

  • Fishnose

    I’m switching to Canon!!!!!

    ;o)

    • JLK

      I’m switching *from* Canon!

      • Hom Thogan

        I switched to BenQ

  • Sly Larive

OMG OMG OMG! I got to have one! Will they offer custom paint colors for my 70-200 VR II?? Please Nikon! I so don’t get it why people custom paint their lenses camo! I want a pink lens!

  • Valiant Thor

What a godsend! I just cancelled my D800e order and ordered a pink “run for the cure” edition CoolPix. Technology just keeps getting better and better. What will they think of next?

  • http://www.johnbrunjes.com JB

I was waiting for this one too. Of course I was expecting a D800 recall or maybe specs for a D400….

This was better!!! I would have never guessed this!!! Great job Admin!

  • isp

    lol ! and a pink one….. great ! Have a nice April fool’s day !

  • Jane

Very nice, love the pink! And if you happen to have two AF-S 70-200 2.8G VRII lenses, you can use them to extend the range of your Nikon binoculars.

    (Good work, Admin!)

    • looon

      ROFL!!!!!!!

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

there is actually a F-mount adapter in those images :)

  • EnPassant

I may have beleived it if the lens and adapter was offered in pink color as well! :D

  • http://davidgadreauphotography.ca David G.

That’s awesome! A product like that deserves $8000 price tag.

  • http://www.alldigi.com/ Geoff

The ultimate birding camera. We will be able to use it every year on 1st April.

  • Spokesdude

    Looks like a nerd humping a monster… :)

  • Ben

Nikon has finally hit the nail on the head. Can’t wait to get rid of all my bulky DSLRs. All I need is gold glass, a coolpix and this adaptor. Thx Nikon

  • an nonymous

I bet Kai from DigitalRev was here.. ;)
Have any of you guys seen him painting Nikon DSLR’s and LEICA in pink, not.. visit the following link:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/DigitalRevCom/videos?query=pink

btw, I would have loved the idea getting up to 1000 mm EFV with a small p&s cam.

  • Jabs

LOL – yeah right. Attaching a magnet to a plastic bodied camera = first clue.

    Crazy glue to the rescue.
Then – Magnet fries camera’s electronics and lens does not come off.

    Oops, too much glue!

    Way to go!

Great joke, but we need more huge lens and small body cameras so we can laugh at ourselves or the challenged consumers or poseurs who like that.

Black, gold and pink – HOW chic – lol.

    Photogeeks!

  • http://www.sugarmountainphotography.com/ D King

I’m skipping the D300s successor now that this adaptor is available. Who needs the vaporware camera anyway.

  • Sucker

    You actually got me. Because:

    1. I read it AFTER april fools day (it’s 9:30 on Monday morning here) so that means (by the rules of April Fools Day), YOU are the fool! ;-)
    2. After the stupid iPhone lens adapter thing, nothing surprises me.

However I did read the comments BEFORE raging. LOL

  • nick

if you know Nikon, you know nikon will charge you at lease 250us for something like that (may go up to 500) – 99, u know is a joke

  • RondoX

Ha Ha Ha! Honestly, I would love to have seen someone try the use the flash on that coolpix!

  • Mike M

I got to about the second paragraph before I was like “oh right, it’s 4/1/12″…
