Interesting.
OK Nikon, now bring on the new DSLRs.
Wish it were Summer…
It’s February of 2011. 5 months until the new cameras are released…and we have no information whatsoever!
I want to know what kindov insane punishment Nikon has threatened its employees with! These people must have the fear of god in them. Perhaps they’re being put to death by guillotine. To put this in perspective, Wikileaks can gather top-secret international foreign diplomatic cables…..yet no one can breach Nikon’s walls of secrecy!
:sigh::
sidenote: I’ve been so frustrated with the wait lately…that I actually kindov miss zzddrr’s rants. that’s when you know things have become desperate
so desperate gt that I even ate my cat! There was not enough resolution to take a decent picture of the cat, so I ate it.
So here’s what you do: Pick some photographic topic you seldom shoot (landscape, urban outdoorsmen, flowers, whatever), master shooting it with what you have. See you in August. I think I’ll tackle a book project and shoot some portraits to keep me distracted.
Elton, you certainly have a point! I feel like I’ve exhausted off camera flash and portraits – I will take up a new genre of photography (landscape is something I’ve never really tackled) to hopefully distract myself. Although, I have a strong feeling I’ll be reloading this website daily for a while…
Well,
A few weeks ago I spoke to a local camera shop owner about the rumored D700 successor, and he reacted kind of blasé: “oh yes, that’s known: it’ll be the D800, it’ll be a 24 MP and it will be out by summer. It will be like a D3X in a D700 form factor”. He inadvertedly received an email about it. Very shortly after he was visited (personally) by the sender of the message urging him to delete the message — and he did (doh!).
Any other specs you remember, I asked? No.
I even asked him to check his trash folder (Peter [NR] made me do it — litteraly!) — but no luck.
Hence my comment: wish it were summer…
::sigh:: the lengths we go through…
this story sounds very unreliable – sorry.
Nikon reps inadvertently sent their most closely held secrets to a ranomd shop owner? no way.
and, then, a suit shows up at his door telling him to delete it? no way.
It’s very movie like and “men in black” inspired – but Nikon just doesn’t work that way. Feel free to believe that guy, but my instinct is that the shop owner was merely trying to impress you
The P300 seems interesting for its price….
I don’t care much about the P500.
Yeah, it seems like the P300 is a really strong competitor to Canon’s S95. Besides being very similar in looks (same pop up flash, roughly same size), the specs are very close (although the Nikon appears to be the winner based on what we know so far):
Nikon P300 | Canon S95
MSRP: $329 | MSRP $399
MP: 12.2 CMOS | 10.0 CCD
Aperture: f/1.8-4.9 | f/2.0-4.9
Zoom: 4.2x | 3.75x
Max ISO: 3200 | 3200
Video: 1080p | 720p
Can’t tell until we see the sensor size and find out if it actually works properly (e.g. autofocus reasonably good, manual focus reasonably good, decent control layout). The S95 and LX5 are second- and third- generation cameras in their respective lines, both well-liked, and both superior to anything Nikon has put out in similar form factors ever. Raw specs mean next to nothing.
Note that its price is very competitive. If it can give the S95 a run for its money in IQ and doesn’t totally suck in ergonomics (where the S95 excels) well, I might actually buy a Nikon compact.
Watch for image quality. 12mp vs. 10mp is not an improvement in the tiny sensor-ed world of P&S. The 1.8 might make it lovely at the wide end, but i think Nikon went very wide (24mm) to get that 1.8. At 28mm (where the Canon starts), they might be both 2.0?? Who knows as of yet.
I’m happy with my S95 and look forward to Canon and Nikon competing in this niche. This is a great camera model from both teams and I hope we can keep “reasonable MP, BRIGHT lens, and slightly larger sensors” and a permanent feature in the P&S line. The S95 is wonderful (except for that idiotic flash that cant be pushed back down and which knocks your left index finger off the camera on the Canon — Nikon seems to have fixed that by giving the index finger a bit of an edge to grip for people who hold with two hands to reduce shake).
Just read that it has a Panorama Generator as well! Thats something the Canon S90/95 doesn’t have.
I’d like to know the sensor size on the P300.
Also, it doesn’t list VR =(
Yes it does. It says so right above the lens on the camera body itself.
All cameras have in-body VR these days. So turn that frown upside down.
YAWN!!!!!!!
For a second I looked at the first P&S in the list and I thought “OMG that’s it they finally put a DSLR-sized sensor in a P&S” and then I realized CMOS is not necessarly DSLR-sized… Dreamer.
BORING!
a think i’ll sell all my extensive nikon kit and just fallow nikons path with these p&s cameras and be quids in
but then why deny myself the plesure i get from capturing fleeting moments in time ……….roll on summer for all its wonderful moments especially the next gen in the nikon pro line-up
great work NR keep it coming ..
P500 doesnt look much different than the P100 was. What would have been nice would be including RAW.
That first one looks like a direct competitor for the Canon S95.
not a whole lot to be excited for?
Interesting feature sets… RAW and Hot shoe’s wouldve been nice.. .
Doesnt beat Canon G9 even!… and that was a few years ago…
Full HB? Wow, they even invented a new video standard!
Interesting, I’m digging the P300 & S9100, but I’m guessing neither is going to offer a RAW option?
the first one’s only 1.8 on the wide end.. on the long end its either 4.2 or 4.8 (cant see clearly).. thats still pretty slow..
isnt the 24-100mm 1.8 missing?
f 1.8-4,8 is pretty pointless. constant f/2.8 would have been better. other manufacturers have 1.8-2.5 and nikon goes f/4.8, shat a shame.
24 1.8 is useless? Not so much. The DOF at 1.8 is probably huge, which means set at say ISO 1600, it’s finally a point and shoot mom can get non-blurry photos out of.
Exactly. 2.8 would be a waste of time. Although a 2.8 constant at the far end would be extremely nice for lower-well-lit scenes, you really need 2.0/1.8 to start getting those dark scenes with no flash.
And face it, P&S flash is as bad as the sensors. 1.8 is the right path. Physically letting in light. Necessary. Consider it a “night” wide-angle camera with daylight “walk-about” range.
I disagree quite a bit, f2.0 has barely been cutting it on my s95, constant, variable, whatever – f2.8 is just to slow for average indoor lighting on a compact, even the best ones. It’s way better to have f1.8 and “foot zoom” than it is to be stuck with f2.8.
foot-zoom at 24-28 mm equivalent ? I hope you’re not planning on shooting some portraits.
I’ll sure as heck take having to move physically closer over having to use iso3200 rather than iso6400, or being able to use iso800 rather than iso1600 any day.
Sorry, but if youre doing portraits, you’re probably INDOORS or youre close enough to use flash. The reason 1.8/2.0 is important is for ENVIRONMENTALS, getting in the landscape and wide areas.
Its true everyone would love to have a bright tele lens, but that’s not possible even in FX (300 1.8 anyone? anyone????? not gonna happen). Therefore, 1.8 at the wide end is really a great feature. Nikon doesn’t even have zoom lenses for FX that does 1.8. The 24-120 is f/4. If it were f/1.8-4.6 it would be amazing just for the low light ability.
that was my point, 1.8 is only for the extreme tele, closing a long way down up to 4.whatever. in my recent shooting I noticed I use 50 mm and 85 mm FX equivalent, rather that 35 or 28, so as a user I would really like 80 f/2.8 rather than 28 1.8. different users, different needs. if I were to ever choose a compact camera, i would buy that samsung or that olympus (both 1,8-2,5), not this nikon.
Hmm.. Hope the sensors are Back-illuminated…
CLS functionality wouldve been amazing in any way.. without the hot shoe… by using the flash as the commander mode……
They couldve really done something cool with the “coolpix” line.. but Nikons still staying behind Canon..
Have you guys seen the rumored 5D Mark III specs??
I just hope the D700 replacement camera is worth it… Nikon has been disappointing me for a while.. First it was the D3x pricing.. and now this.. Waiting for D800 (or whatever its called).. Fingers, toes, legs , arms, eyes crossed..
jehhhh, i just realized….the first one is the rumored 24-100mm….but 1.8-4,9?…4.2 zoom(24×4.2=100mm…..)…am i right?
Does the P300 have an Aperture ring? That was perhaps the most endearing quality of the S90. The S95 is slightly improved with a better grip, and barely anything else.
This Nikon looks like it has a solid grip as well as a place for the left hand index finger near the flash — which was was strikingly missing from the nasty S90/S95 flash that kicks-your-finger-off-the-camera. The S90/S95 flash comes up so mechanically strong that it could force you to drop your camera if you weren’t expecting the popup!!
Nikon seems to have improved the glass 1.8 vs. Canon’s 2.0, and improved the grip. I (wish it has an Aperture ring and I) hope C2 Expeed looks as nice as Canon S90 series. If the image quality is good, its a winner. The 12mp worries me. Although I’m sure it can be done, Canon uses 10mp, which means Nikon is putting up their own road blocks. Then again, Nikon is an expert at 12mp by now..
i think the s95 will have better IQ, IF nikon (as it looks like) has a BI sensor…and probably no raw either….
No flash hotshoes on their point-and-shoots, which would have been useful for me. Guess we’ll have to wait for reviews for their point-and-shoots, but I think most of us are not hopeful for good high-ISO performance compared to other point-and-shoots.
Lets see what their next dSLRs end up having.
Looks like the P300 could be interesting, nice price point and fast lens. Depends on the sensor, if not as good as the S90/5 then the camera better be amazing in some other way other then video.
Wondering what the backlash on the web site is going to be…
man oh man, the ADMINs source made me mad….LOL….1.8 constant….
f/1.8 on the wide end
4.9 at the tele end
Olympus XZ-1 2.5 at the tele end
Now even the entire coolpix line has more average resolution than the FX line. Nikon Nikon, what is going on?
LOL,
someone just had to say it. Either Zzddrr or Anonymous.
I wish I knew that zzddrr, he/she must be a good guy (or girl). At least he/she brings some funny rants here.
But he’s (or she) seem to be away.
I suppose you know him very well.
NIKON – Who cares your coolpix ?
Brings to market new FF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I posted that cache link but I guess my own comment was marked as spam
I’m sure it’s all wonderful but all I can see is BLAH BLAH BLAH. At least the funds will go to reshaping the FX lines………….
look like there is a big wheel on the upper left of the P3OO, easily activated by thumb, reminiscent of the P6000, who had also a flash hotshoe and optical viewfinder.
If there is a wheel around the lens also, this means fantastic control layout !
So it’s an f1.8 – 4.9. Man, what a let-down!
Alright, so it will be either a Panasonic LX5 or an Olympus XZ-1 to supplement my D700.
wait for the nikon EVIL announcement before making your decision — as painful as waiting is
It doesn’t mention the sensor size – I bet the d300′s (the f1.8 one) sensor is the regular compact camera size, like the sd4000 (f2.0 lens – or it’s replacement that’s also 12mp, 1080p, cmos backlit).
I love how the more expensive cameras have less megapixels these days than their cheaper brothers
Looks like the new Nikon F1.8 compact has a 1/2.33 sensor and no raw… bummer…
Don’t know where else to post this, but even as a Nikon user I was excited about the X100… seeing the results over at
http://photorumors.com/2011/02/08/fuji-x100-update/#more-8559
and the official sample images from X100, I’m decidedly underwhelmed… The d90 and 35 1.8 looks way better. The one thing I am still pumped about is the viewfinder. Hopefully we will see an iteration of it in the Nikon Mirrorless.
The one thing I’m concerned about is that the Nikon Mirrorless (if aimed at professionals) is going to be ABSURDLY priced. Apart from the D7000, it seems like every new item Nikon releases gets a huge price hike. I’m betting it will cost at least as much as the D700 did new, and that’s before lenses.
Looks like a Ricoh for me.
BTW, are there any Ricoh GR + A12 users on this forum?
Hey jack,
I use a GX200 as my “carry with me all the time” camera…the GR range is similar and about a stop better as far as the sensor goes. Build quality and features are really good but high iso is pretty useless, anything beyond 400 on my GX200 is pretty unusable…the inbuilt flash is very good. Try looking for a good used model, that’s what I did and got an as new model for half price.
I’m also waiting to see the mirrorless models from Canon and Nikon…the X100 is just too expensive for what I need, and the abuse it gets.
Who cares about Coolpix, Gimme D800!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly! Who cares coolpix! I wait for next generation of DSLR´s D400 and D800. I´m waiting for them more than 1 year and now I am very confused. So I think to switch to Canon …
I thought people using their iPhones for point & shoot now, no?
I work in Retail, I hope the P300 comes out soon, I keep seeing people buying the S95, for 400$, its a waste. P300 is priced right, and in Canada, gets a 2 year warranty.
I just hope its STEREO sound. S90 had that, and people found out later…
P300′s lens is a bit faster, but is (likely half-baked) “panorama mode” something a dedicated enthusiast is going to buy a camera for?
Is panorama mode for dedicated enthusiasts? Well, no, but then these aren’t aimed at “enthusiasts” they are squarely aimed at Point and Shooters.
That said, I made an in camera panorama a while back while skiing. Very cool to just do it while I was waiting for others.
This is a “everybody’s point and shoot”, you’re right. Kinda was hoping for something to surpass the canon s95 significantly in terms of focal lenth, accessible manual controls (look ma, no menus), and a hot shoe (maybe); I’d be more tempted to by the canon or the new olympus – nikon’s doesn’t push the envelope on their coolpix the way they do their dslr’s. .02
Absolutely right, Dave. They are extremely conservative and go for the “me too” approach too often. Then they throw curve balls and include projectors into their cameras, etc. Its ridiculous.
Nikon should just try to do “a little bit BETTER” than the previous camera competitors a year or two ago. That’s all. It seems like even if they put in a brighter lens they don’t put in a better sensor. Or if they put in this feature, they hold back on x feature. Despite clear intentions of competition, Nikon prefers to be invisible and price themselves $50 bucks less than the next guy.
Hey, i guess $50 bucks less sells in the world of P&S.
But id rather the brand have meaning.
So now we know. Are we happy?
No, I’m not. I want the D5000 replacement, maybe the T3i.
Give them a month or two
I am a Coolpix P100 owner, but my natural next step is the D5000 replacemente, I don’t like the D3100, I want More.
OK, I will wait the 2 months.
WOW! I’M SO F.ING EXITED ABOUT THOSE COOLPIX! I’M GONNA BUY THEM ALL!
…NOT!
I think Nikon is doing a great job at pissing off its most valuable customers. Or perhaps they don’t give a damn. Otherwise we would have something to that addresses the needs of those who consider buying the 5DII.
I think Nikon is f***d up and simply does not have the sensor to launch new FX bodies. When sony comes through 1-2 months later Nikon will come through. It is not a coinsidence. The question is whether sony can learn and improve.
I wonder, what if sony would make available without license fee the alpha mount lenses for zeiss and the others the same way they are doing it with the E-mount. Now that could be a blow to Nikon. Because no matter what Zeiss lenses are good and it is just a matter of time sony fixes its DSLR line especially the FX. One good sign is there that the A850 is affordable and not that bad of a camera.
Try to imagine if sony comes out with an A860 that has an improved sensor matching the image quality of the D3x plus adds 1080p at less then 2 grand. Many would considered that piece….
Now it’s time to wake up this cinderella Nikon because it is getting boring.
Listen Anonymous/zzddrr,
meanwhile I am so desperate that I look at both competitors’ lineups every single day. Means, I look at Canon as well as I look at Sony. And I am willing to fork out a lot of money for body or even bodies and lenses …
I would buy Canons EOS-1Ds MK III if it only had 1080 video, but it does not. I almost hate to admit it, but the D3X is still the better machine for stills by far and the Canon isn’t that much cheaper. Absolutely nothing to gain here.
I even considered 1D MK IV, but I do architecture as well. Canon’s 24mm TS-E is a great lens and out-performes the Nikkor, but on a 1.3 crop factor ? ? ? I’ve even tried 5D MKII and … yes, it has video and 21 MP but at what costs ? ? ? Awful Af-points, slow processing and frame rate for stills as well as an unacceptable feel of the body. No way!
And I’ve even considered to combine Sony’s NEX-VG10E HD-Camcorder with the purchase of an alpha-FF-body. Sony doesn’t do tilt-and-shift at all …
Nikons unability or unwillingness to release 1080 video in a pro-body or just higher resolution for stills and priced below D3x really pisses me off, but I also start to realize that it pisses me nowhere …
Ah, f/1.8 – 4.9. A year ago it would’ve been nice, but I think I’m going to order the Olympus XZ-1 instead. I should still be able to force it into my jeans pocket (really pushing it, though).
It is possible to have it in your jeans pocket if its a slightly larger one. I wouldnt try it if you like slim fit ones tho ;>
Well the S95′s total thickness is 30 mm, the XZ-1 is 43 mm, according to imaging-resource.com. That’s the size increment you pay for the bright f/1.8-2.5 lens.
I sure hope these are not the only new product announcements for today. I want to see the release of the 300mm f/4 VR and 80-400mm replacement.
My favorite: S6100–Pet Portrait Mode.
I’m happy to see a refresh of the P&S line, as Nikon really didn’t have many competitors for Canon. Hopefully these will live up and get some converts. I’m sure Ashton Kutcher is licking his chops for new commercials.
Also, coming from Olympus about 8 months ago, it’s funny to see everyone clamoring for body refreshes. Oly was not “when” but “if” a new model would come out. Given, lots of Nikon products are going on 2+ years, but I’m just happy to see dedication to new lenses and bodies, and I’m glad they’re producing good kit instead of slapping on software and a new badge and expecting money.
Ah, it’s good to be home.
WAS???? In Summer? Alright, cancel my Nikon D800 pre-order! Buy me a Sony Alfa!
Admin do you think its good for me to buy a d700 now with 16-35 b.c there is a 300$ rebate and sell d700 to get the update when it releases, or should i just wait?
if you do not have a camera, get the D700 now
ah… where is DSDLRs?
Nikon, why not stop chasing Canons tail and make your own coolpix line? camon, first a bad implemented attempt of having your G12s version, now an SD4000 (or S95)copy? please make an XZ-1 version instead, if you want to copy the competitors….
That looks like an awful lot of Coolpixes! Most of them look the same to me though. I could never differentiate between the various models…
You’re right, as soon as you see the word “Coolpix” you just switch off…I’ve never met anyone that actually owns one ?…who buys these things ?
For those of you reading french more details here:
http://www.lemondedelaphoto.com/Nikon-P300-il-a-presque-tout-d-un,5550.html
Aargh no RAW!!
I can’t believe it!
DP review has previews now
Welp…Thats a disappointment(p300). I was hoping for a 24-100 1.8-2.8 lens…that didnt happen. Then I was atleast hoping for a 1.7 sensor….and again…no. This camera not in the same league as the S95….Got worked up about nothing. Just another cool pix disappointment. I dont even know what I was thinking…a cool pix…noooo.
Well, P300 does 720p@60 fps!
I feel better. Just ordered a Nikkor lens yesterday. So happy they didn’t release a Fujifilm X100 clone or a Olympus XZ-1 clone or a Lumix LX-5 clone since I’m spent for now. Lens, Kirk lens collar and monopod head w/QR due Friday, CC bill due end of month.
I have to say I am totally excited about the P300. I have been looking for an excuse to bring Nikon back into my compact fold. I want to see pics and specs first, but this cam could replace my not-so-pocketable LX3 if it’s worthy. The design is even more clean than typical Nikon compacts. If it’s as good as it looks, and if Nikon has found a way to squeeze a bit more low-light goodness from that tiny sensor, then this might be my consolation prize until the D700 replacement rolls around. I hope it doesn’t disappoint.
If this cam is as good as it looks, that only leaves the following compact holes in Nikon’s lineup:
1. A “Tough” cam with underwater capabilities
2. A Sigma DP competitor, fixed lens, larger than average compact sensor
