Thanks for the update. I just ordered it and canceled my order from Amazon. Don’t know whats up with Amazon, I’ve hear some have got theres shipped who ordered on the same day I did, but Amazon still says they have no date when I long on to check the order. Oh well, B&H is the bomb.

A few people discussing this lens on DPRev don’t seem very impressed with the performance. Mind you could just be QC probs with early ones or that they are consumer lenses from Thailand. I like my Nikkors with ‘Made In Japan’ embossed on them.

Huh? You must be reading DPRev and not dpreview. I’ve only seen huge praise by people who actually own it (well except one guy who clearly had no idea what he was doing)

Ricardo can you please provide a link to the negative comments on dpreview. i have seen only positive ones on both dpreview and flickr forums.

This new lens from Nikon – 35/1.8 – is aimed for the entry level, and it has obvious CA. I have tested it today and will not be keeping.

Yep, I saw more than just purple fringing. Clear magenta to green shift from in front to behind the plane of focus on high contrast subjects with close focus.

It’s a budget lens. Some folks are gonna be disappointed. However, I still think it is fine for general use.

This alert is wrong. They are accepting orders. It states on their site:

“This item is currently not in stock. We are accepting orders and it will be shipped when in stock.”

You should change the alert to indicate they are accepting orders even though they’re not in stock… Something B&H usually doesn’t do.

It DID show as in stock. I got the auto alert email from B&H at 5:00 PM today and when I went to their site immediately after it WAS in stock. Either they jumped the gun and had premature notification or it was in stock and then they sold out.

now, looks like pixelpeelers and gearheads rushed out to buy the 35mm 1.4 AFS just to test it by shooting wide open

    *sigh*

look at 50mm 1.8D AF, the new 35mm performs the same, optically wise.

*sigh* from me too. You’ve got to wonder about some people’s understanding of photography and equipment. Someone above says “obvious CA”, well, dur, it’s 200 bucks.

        *sigh*

because… gearheads LOVE to have every single lens, cameras, flashes, accessories, and whatever else nikon come out with. they get frustrated over a lens’ performance coming from a lens that they will NEVER use.

Stock cleared customs and appeared in the shops at lunchtime today in Hong Kong.

Most places are asking about HK$1650 which is US$210.

My initial impression is that it is a good lens – very similar performance to the 50mm f1.8, but at almost twice the price. Kinda like the AF-S vs the AF-D 50mm f1.4s !

    • Posted March 13, 2009 at 10:25 am | Permalink

I did a few test shots last night, and that’s the result I came up with, performance is pretty much identical to the 50mm f/1.8D I have, but the almost 50% increase in angle of view makes a big difference between the two lenses.

Whatever you do, don’t be a fool and place an order with Amazon right now. Amazon is selling through Beach Camera at this moment for $244.95. But if you go direct to Beach Camera’s web site, they are selling it for $199.95 (new, USA warranty, nothing fishy, I checked). Bad!

It was back in stock late last night at Amazon for 20 minutes also, cause i was able to order one that they say will ship out on Monday. Could be due to some cancellations.

So, according to the shopkeeper – the guy I always buy my stuff from – I’m the first person in Hong Kong to get this lens, he sent a guy all the way out to the Nikon warehouse here to pick up the lens for me (it wont be in stores for a couple days), I waited impatiently for an hour in the store to get it. Worth every dollar. I absolutely love this lens, it’s great for the event photography I do, because the 50mm f/1.8 is really awkward to use on a D80 (~75mm focal length).

Well, from reading the above posts it seems I wasn’t the first. But that’s beyond the point anyway, I was just repeating what I was told. I’m just happy I have one of these, it’s great.

Yeah, you can’t believe the rubbish they come out with here ! I got mine at Centrepoint in TST. Initially, he wanted $1750 but I saw it in Tin Cheung and asked there and they said $1680, so I asked the guy I know in Centrepoint and he dropped the price.

The price check websites here say it should be 1750 – weird. I expect it’ll drop with the next shipment to 1600.

I picked up the 35mm 1.8G last week from a local, Long Island camera store. They had just one for the usual 199.95. Pretty good deal and a great lens for my D300
