I am back online. Here are the weekly Nikon news/links for last week (sorry for the delay):
→ While I was offline, several websites reported that Nikon USA has moved the D300s camera to the archived section. Just to remind you that the D300s was officially discontinued by Nikon back in 2012 (together with the D700).
→ New firmware 1.05 released for the Phottix Mitros+ flash for Nikon.
→ Nikon UK announced two new ambassadors.
→ New Nikon cashback program in Germany (see also the latest Nikon instant rebates in the US).
→ Nikon UK July Cover Star Competition is now open for entries.
→ You can get a refurbished Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for $1,466.88 on eBay.
→ A mint 800mm f/5.6 lens is listed on eBay for $16,599 (original price: $17,896.95).
As previously reported, the Nikon lens-only rebates are now back in the US for 6 different Nikkor models. This offer will expire on June 14 and it will not be extended. The new savings are also already reflected on Adorama and Amazon:
I can now confirm the the announcement date for the Nikon D800/E camera replacement: June 26th. Here again are the rumored specifications:
An excellent guest post by Des Ong (website | Facebook | Instagram) on wildlife photography from Coolpix 4200 to D3s and every camera in between:
Hi, I’m Des Ong and I’m a full-time wildlife photographer based in the UK. I’ll come clean – I’ve not always been a Nikon photographer. The first three cameras I owned were in fact from the ‘lighter side’. The first being an old manual SLR camera my college tutor insisted we use.
Over the last decade, I’ve had the opportunity to use a number of Nikon cameras and I thought it would be interesting to share some of my experiences with you, and what I think of them.
When digital cameras became more readily available, I traded what I had at the time for my first very first Nikon – a compact Coolpix 4200. This 4MP camera was a real game changer. Free from the constraints of film development costs and seduced by the newfound instant gratification of the digital medium, this was my most prolific period. Nothing escaped me. It was used to capture anything and everything from my newborn daughter to bugs and aquatic creatures. The image files were not clean and the video pretty shocking, but the contents were important to me, and I can capture images anytime, anywhere, and share my experiences easily. My wife still uses one, although this was bought used a few years ago after the original was damaged beyond repair.
The images below were made some years ago with my trusty Coolpix 4200:
A quick update on my previous post: without mentioning the exact countries, I received several tips that NDA press invitations have been already sent out for an event scheduled for next week. The official announcements are usually few days after those closed doors press events.
In another country, Nikon reps are already scheduling in-store demos for a new camera.
Everything so far points to a major product announcement, most likely the rumored D800s camera (and not Coolpix cameras). The D9300 is also a remote possibility, but I have not heard any rumors on that model since April.
I still have no exact date, but I am guessing the official announcement will be in the second half of June – just like I reported it last month.
Nikon may bring back the popular “lens-only” rebates (no need to purchase a DSLR body in order to qualify) for six different Nikkor models for Father’s Day. The special is supposed to run from June 8-14th and will include the following lenses (with the corresponding instant savings):
